Re: Australian Trivia Only
Thanks Ray. The Courier Mail has been doing a daily extract from Cooks diaries. I think it xstarted in there somewhere. Hmm, now I will have to come up with something. Back soon.
Cheers

A bit of fortuosity there, eh?supersparky wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 2:11 pm The Courier Mail has been doing a daily extract from Cooks diaries.
FYI: Watkin Tench was a Captain-Lieutenant of Marines sent out as part of the guard component of the First Fleet. His was the first published account of life in the new colony. First published in pamphlet form on 24 April 1789.
He followed it up with A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson in 1793.
In 1996 Tim Flannery republished them as a single volume, with editing for spelling consistency & explanatory footnotes. Tim has been Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Museum, Chief Commissioner of the Climate Commission and wrote The Future Eaters in 1994, among other books.

Re: Australian Trivia Only
Not according to the book in front of me.
Tench mentions that due to the inability of the new colony to produce enough food, the Sirius was sent to the Cape of Good Hope to purchase supplies.
The text for his first book was sent to his London publisher via the Cape.
Most of the educated members of the FF were signed up by various publishers. Tench was just first out of the blocks.

Who hasn’t?
(I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken. )
I reckon he’s been right more often than wrong.
He would also have other researchers (not to mention an Editor — part of whose job, on a book such as this, is to confirm sources) to check his work.

Hint. It wasn't at Gallipoli.
