My health record.

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

My health record.

Post by native pepper »

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the online "My health record" and was wondering how others felt about it.

Until the recently ahd intended to not be involved and was going to do the don't want it thingy. Five weeks ago, had a bizarre incident with my neighbours dog, which resulted in the little finger on my left hand being almost bitten off and my right hand shredded. After sorting it all out and getting the dogs back in the car, drove over 50klms to a medical center with finger hanging off and oozing blood everywhere.

As it happened the local ambulance was in Hobart and after the quack checking my hands out, they wanted to sedate me until they could get an ambulance. Instead went home, got my neighbour (drummer) and headed for Hobart. Being on DVA, went to the Hobart private hospital for their supposed superior medical care, where they told me they had no surgeons or even doctors on duty to look after me, so walked to the Royal Hobart's emergency.

In emergency they wanted to give me pain relief and antibiotics, told them I have severe allergies and some were antibiotics. They reassured me I was in the best place if things went wrong and proceeded to intravenously give me antibiotics, whilst waiting for the plastic surgeons to look at my hands.

I survived the first dose of antibiotics, but the second was different, sending me into shock, resulting in everyone freaking out. They fixed that with Adrenalin and antihistamines and once again tried to give me pain relief, which I kept refusing. It was then that someone asked if I had health insurance, said had DVA gold card and they instantly said, he will be online. From that point on they knew what I could have and what would effect me.

During my 3 days and nights in the emergency surgical ward and 2 operations, they did allergy tests to see what I could have and what not. After the first operation when in the recovery room at 0200hrs, a nurse smiled at me and said we can give you pan relief now and the last 24hrs of intense pain disappeared. When they got me back to the surgical ward, there was a huge sign behind my bed with a light on it with a list of my severe allergies and the things which could tolerate, but not without side effects. Only had intravenous pain relief for the first 4 hours after both operations which was fine, after the second op, they changed to endone pills, which made me very sick, but didn't kill me. So took no more and still got the box of oxycodiene they gave me for relief when I got home, saying it will make you queasy, but nothing more. After 4 weeks, my body is still getting over all the drugs they pumped into me and it has only been in the last week, that have felt almost alive. Luckily have some really cool friends who provided me with the best pain relief on the planet with no side effects, and lovely benefits. But that's another story and one that made the medical professionals involved, really sit up and take note and each time I go to them they ask me more questions about it and even the phisio's ask every tome I see them, which is now twice a week.

The time in the emergency surgical ward and recovery room, where I lay from 1000Hrs till 053 waiting for them to finish all their emergency operations, so the plastics people could work on me, was a real eye opener.

I turns out, if you have DVA gold card, your health records have been on line for a number of years as they experimented with it. Now that really pissed me off because they didn't tell me, but since my experience, have changed my mind and will leave it there, but try to restrict who and who can't access it.

What it means is now can travel and play without worrying if something goes wrong, the treatment they dish out, may kill me before they realise their mistake. Now no matter where I'm in Aus, my records can be accessed instantly, even when in an ambulance or being treated by paramedics.

Tomorrow, get all the wiring out of my left hand and my right hand healed within a week, because I didn't take anything they gave me, but used my own knowledge gained over the decades trying to work out all the problems was having with foods and medications.

Now, it looks like may have to re-learn how to play guitar, as my hand at the moment is non functional and just hoping when all the wires come out, will only have to do the right exercises and treatments to get it back functioning properly again. Luckily have no gigs to miss until the middle of next month, heading to the Wangaratta jazz and blues festival and to catch up with muso friends

Interested in what others think about having their health records online and or if they have had similar occasions to need them.

I have had one for quite a while and decide to check it out after a few hospital visits and some detailed consultations etc on the last two years and to my surprise found there was no data except for the medication prescribed by doctor but only updated by chemist at dispensing.
I have been on some very nasty drugs and have a problem that if treated with certain medication such as normal antibiotics etc would very quickly kill me. No mention of my hospital visits and brain scans and other tests done in RAH and Illawarra hospital and several other visits to hos[itals and my doctor informed me he will not be entering any data as it takes up to much time.
I have now stopped all drugs and now self medicate and have no faith in the medical institution and my doctor who even though he had never heard of my disease is rope able I have stopped the medication that even he was horrified when he first saw the scripts.
In a crisis if I am misdiagnosed the treatment could kill me and make my kids very happy LOL.
Before you put too much trust in this system check to see if your doctor is prepared to update data and when entering hospital ask if they access as several hospitals I went into stated they dont / cant access the data and it took three days on one visit before I could get any of my drugs as they could not identify ALL my drugs so gave me none.
Apparently if DF you are lucky (and so you should be) but normal citizens must differ.

Do you boys have the old Medic Alert Bracelet? Might just save your life one day. I don't really care who sees or knows any of my medical history, have nothing to be worried about, not as if I spread some dreaded disease all over the place.
NP hope you are on the road to recovery now. At least keep an up to dated record of all your medications and esp allergies.

NP do hope your hand recovers & you can play your guitars, sounds a terrible experience from the dog attack to the hospital treatment, take it easy.
Our local imaging place gives you a plastic identification card with it your imagining records can be looked at Australia wide.
We haven't bothered to opt out of the medical records scheme but agree it should be kept private.

Thanks everyone, it wasn't the dogs fault, he tried to jump out of the back of my cruiser but got his paw caught between the tailgate and car, falling out, had to grab him and lift him back in so his leg didn't break. Must have hurt a great deal, which is why he had a go at my hands, then when trying to get his paw out, he needed something to hold onto, my left hand. Once got it out he let go and started to lick my hand, to late then, since, every time he sees me he wants to sniff my hand and lick me. He's a lovely bloke and very concerned for my welfare.

Would like to post more, but it tells me I'm forbidden to read this page.

I'm in favor of the My Health Record.
Not that there is much on mine yet. I must remember to tell my local surgery to opt-me-in.
None of the specialists I see appear there so I guess I have to tell them too.

All my prescribed meds are there. Too bloody many for my liking but at least the list is available if/when needed.
The only other interesting thing is the discharge papers from an overnight stay in hospital.
I din't ask the hospital to put it there, but I am happy to see it. I just hope that the opportunity to have more is a long way off.

I do carry a list of my current meds with me. The hospital were impressed with my list.

Thanks for that update NP. I thought the dog deserved a bullet a bit earlier but now I see he was only reacting to a bad situation.
I hope that you get back on track soon and can continue to play.
Why are you forbidden to read this page???

I am all for anything that might be used to help me - whether accident or whatever might befall me. Quite happy to leave my details as they are.
