Species of rosella required

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Can anyone recognise the species of rosella which visits us in Newcastle?

The closest my bird book says is a Eastern Rosella ?..But they don't have the red go all the way under the bellie .
They are the only ones showing white under their cheek .?
Best I can do , maybe Kay might know more when she surfaces . Or Lesley .

The red covers its' back as well. It is the same size as the Eastern Rosella but about half the size of the Crimson Rosella and is not as flighty as the Eastern. The closest I have been able to match it with is the Western Rosella but with white cheeks rather than yellow. If Western it is a fair way from home.

I think it can only be an Eastern Rosella.

There is a school of thought that a subspecies of the Western Rosella called xanthogenys is regularly displaying white cheeks. More so in captivity than in the wild. Oddly enough they are regularly popping up on the eastern seaboard.

Have seen enough photos just like this one in the past year or so to not discount this theory.

Whether they are aviary escapees or not we don’t know but they certainly are out there.

I have been able to get a closer look and have noticed some small red spots on its' back (unable to get a photo). I have decided to go with Red Back Western Rosella.

Have consulted our bird ref book.
Probably a juvenile Eastern Rosella.

Ray, do they have completely red bodies as this one has?

Hi George,
Not completely... but genetic variation is possible.
Our Simpson & Day says the Eastern Rosella is also known as a White Cheeked Rosella. Juvenile is “like female, red head speckled green.” No mention of back colour.
Another possibility is the Pale Headed Rosella, race ‘palliceps’. “White or pale yellow head, nape (occasionally red feathers), locally called ‘Custardheads’. White cheeks.”
However, if so, at Newcastle it’s well outside its normal range, marked as central-southern Qld, ending roughly at the NSW border! (Possibly an escaped domestic pet?)
I suggest you send the photos to either Taronga Zoo or the Gould League and ask them.
Regards & God bless,
Ray
