Rear concrete deck needs some TLC.

Our house was built in 1972 & we bought it in 1984 when I resigned from the Air Force.

At that time the deck was painted a dark brown - perhaps to try & match the earthy colours in the back garden. We eventually repainted it with an appropriately labelled sandy/beige colour & that must have been around 15-20 years ago.

That began peeling & cracking, possibly from the number of birds that visit... but probably mainly due to the cockies & their large claws.

So now we are going to try to remove all the old paint & give it a fresh coat or two of a better quality paint - unknown at this time.

Had the SIL come around with his new toy - Gurney(sp?) - where he spent a couple of hours on Sunday & managed to lift a fair bit of the loose stuff, but there is still a considerable amount still firmly attached.

Any ideas of easy ways to remove this?
Once the paint is removed does the concrete need treating or sealing?
How many coats of a good quality brand paint...brand?

Thanks.

A mix of caustic soda and water over the painted bits and let it soak in around the edges. It will weaken the concrete surface where the paint has adhered and it will come off in sheets but might take a few goes.
When the concrete is completely dry and warm to the touch, a mix of Taubmans industrial floor paint thinned 50% virtually poured over the bare concrete, followed by a coat of neat paint over that. The idea is the thinned paint will soak in and bind deep into the concrete and the neat coat over the top will blend with the upper layer of thinned paint tying it deep into the concrete so it won't flake off at the surface.
We regularly painted the workshop floor at my mechanical workshop in Wollongong and this was the process that actually worked, the other methods simply started to peal after a few weeks because of the high impact traffic.
Wattyl make very good industrial paints as well so that might be worth checking out

Chuck, I shifted a load of oil that spilt on our driveway over the years with spirits of salts.Should shift the old paint and etch the concrete for painting, two jobs in one go!! Dont get any on yourself cause its a bit vicious........

just thinking.....possibly heat; soften it up then remove it mechanically.

Bruce is right about pressure washers. Tried using a cheapie on colour bond to remove black mound. Wouldn't touch it. Got a monster one and Voom Voom Voom.

Another cheap way to paint it is with water based fence paint. Had a mate that owned a fishing tackle/marine type shop years ago and as the premises were leased he used to paint the concrete floor with the cheapest water based fence paint he could find, in the aisles it would start to wear after 18 months to 2 years and he would just recoat on a saturday afternoon and by sunday morning it was ok to walk on.
I was sceptical but painted a a shed floor here at home with cheap water based fence paint now going on 12 years ago and it is just starting to show signs of needing another coat in the high traffic area but the rest is fine. It had two coats initially, the first one really soaked into the concrete and the second made it look very evenly coated, hasn't lifted or peeled anywhere.

A really good one should be around or over 4000 psi and will did a hole in that concrete if you wanted to.
If his machine is like my cheapy it is only about 1500psi & is ok for washing the car!!!
Dunno, new machine & he was 'practicing' & helping us at the same time.

Bit off center, but bio diesel will lift just about anything off concrete, have used it to clean deeply ingrained oil and grease from a garage floor, and drive way. Yo just spread it on, leave it over night and then wash it off. All biodegradable and safe for anything it touches, unless you want it cleaned up.
