Vans destroyed in Gerringong blaze

Police are treating a blaze that destroyed two caravans at Werri Beach Caravan Park last night as suspicious.

Detectives from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command are now investigating the fire and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews, assisted by Fire Rescue NSW, rushed to the Gerringong caravan park around 7.30pm last night where one caravan was fully engulfed in flames.

NSW Rural Fire Service Illawarra zone manager Richard Cotterill said the fire then spread to a second van and the first crew on the scene were forced to try and extinguish the blaze in the windy weather.

"The crew battled high winds, [which were] spreading burning embers to other vans nearby," he said.

"Further crews arrived a short time later and the fire was contained to the two vans, but at least two others suffered some heat damage.”

The vans were unoccupied at the time and no-one was hurt.
