Dot can you give some details of the (gear) box please?
How many forward gears?
Is it a big step (25-30k/hr)from second to last to last gear or is it a small gap? (like 10-15 k/hr)
Banal .. Open to any topic on and off topics etc

I would have to say big step
Had someone say today ,, jack up one front wheel, chock the back ones so no movement. put in neutral. mark the bottom of the tyre and also mark the surface (road) mark the things at the back ??? cant remember them all, then see how many times the wheel spins compared to one turn of the steering wheel

I'd have to look because I'm not sure of how your rig is set up Dot but from memory the engine is in the back and is (of course) rear wheel drive.
I'm presuming there is a short 'jack-shaft' from gearbox to diff.?
I've got a gadget that can count RPM's that will work it out for you.
Do you have a tacho on the dash showing engine revs?
The info someone gave you sounds more like for front wheel drive (car)as in that case there is no diff to throw into the mix.
Sounds like it may not be an overdrive gearbox if it has a big step in the last gear.
That big step is not going to be good when towing a car.........
Roughly what speed do you get in 5th without over revving? You may spend much time in that gear to obtain decent fuel economy!

Dot it sounds like your bus has the gearbox/diff in the one unit... a bit like a front wheel drive car.
If this is for having your Gross Combination weight assessed then I think I'd just make it up. I doubt any of them would know differently & it's irrelevant anyway!!

Dot, I am fairly sure your bus has a trans axle gearbox/ diff combination. I am going back to your modifying the bus post and have a look at the pics .Why do you need to know the ratios? It is a real bugger to work them out accurately. But it can be done.
Nup, not there, must have been on another forum........Somewhere in your photo collection is a pic taken at the conversion mob when there was no floor and only a bare frame over the engine/ gearbox. See if you can find that and repost it. Then someone might be able to idenify it.

The bit at the bottom of the photo appears to be the diff housing. Do you want to know the actual gearbox ratios or just the diff ratio?

Gear box is what the engineer said.

Re: Banal .. Open to any topic on and off topics etc
I would just use the ratios advertised for a similar weight capacity truck of the same brand and turbo charged engine size. It's an engineer you are dealing with, they just need numbers to write in the boxes. If the ratios are deemed not satisfactory, then you can point to the same ratio gearbox in a registered truck that was deemed suitable for Aust roads and that will end the argument
