Perfect Puppy Training Tips

Post by Dot »

Are you welcoming a puppy into your family?

It’s such a momentous time when you’re welcoming a gorgeous ball of fluff into your world, as we all know they will eventually grow up and become a best friend to your entire family.

At the beginning of your new relationship with your puppy there is so much to learn about nutrition and training.

Growing puppies need a higher proportion of protein in their diet than adult dogs, ideally provided by a ration of balanced fresh meat.

An excellent way to train your puppy is to start with great habits from a young age. Especially early socialisation with many different dogs (all sizes and breeds), including different people and environments, as it’s important for young pups to learn social manners and tolerance.

Begin with basics; keep training sessions short and focused, no longer than 15 minutes. Puppies have short attention spans.

Teach them their name, how to sit, stay, come and heel, and make sure your puppy receives consistent messages from everyone in the family to avoid confusion.

Socialise your pup early. The first 16 weeks is the best time to start getting them familiar with other dogs and humans.

Attend puppy classes, or puppy training schools, taught by trained dog instructors.

Use positive reinforcement - always acknowledge good behaviour. Praise and reward your dog when you receive the desired outcome, and it’s generally best to ignore any unwanted behaviour.

Make sure you use healthy treats as a reward. Many pet treats are full of salt and sugar so choose wisely.

Remember, overall please be patient and relaxed, but confident. Dogs are pack animals; your pup needs to know who’s in charge.
Queen of the Banal & OT chatter and proud of it. If it offends you then tough titty titty bang bang.
