He will ask the person who put the new radiator in last year whether he thoroughly flushed it out.
Bruce said he has doubts about filter on top hose as it could restrict the flow & if not watched could cook motor!

If it started to restrict the flow it would be exactly the same as the blockage in the radiator core, you would see it start to heat up on a long pull. The next time the engine had sat for long enough to cool down you simply pull the filter basket out, clean the crap out and put it back in, after a while all the crap will be cleaned out and the problems sorted. I fitted them with every engine rebuild and recored radiator for 12 yrs when I had my workshop and never had a problem with the filter causing an engine over heat, but I emptied a lot of rust lumps out over the years that would have blocked the new radiator.

We used several clean out chemicals on VP as we could see the radiator was full of oily sludge.
WOTAFM so we tried something Qld Diesel suggested, all truckies use it, an acid based thing, I think was called restore? Hot water must be used.
You shoulda seen the crap that oozed outta that motor after that.MUD !!
Took the water pump off for a rebuild, inside the water jacket was like a new motor.
Worked for us on this occasion where the other well recommended stuff did not.
So much stuff was loosened, I felt we had to pull the top and bottom tanks on the radiator, was 90% blocked, mostly by stuff from the restore if that is what it was called, so very easy to rod out.

the acid and alkaline based ones are great for cast iron blocks and heads, but they destroy alloy heads. It's a real battle trying to clean cast iron blocks with alloy parts attached, what works on cast iron is lethal to alloy, what works on alloy has virually no effect on cast iron.

Well there will be nothing done about the heating at the moment because just had to fork out $1,632 for a new compressor for the Nissan to get aircon working again. I guess after no work for the past 400,000 k it deserved some TLC. That is 2 out of 3 problems solved.

Hi all
when I worked for Nissan in a previous life when the 4.2ltr would run hot as did mine when I had one this is what we did.
Full cooling system flush and replace coolant with Nissan long life also if it has a viscos hub fan I would suggest in replacing the oil in it as it may have lost its properties. Also flush out the radiator as when a engine runs hot it loosens a lot of the scale and dumps it into the radiator.
the above is also what we did on the under ground vehicles minus the long life as they were Toyotas.
anyway hope this is helpful

Do Nissan sell the hydrostatic fan fliud as a spare part Jamie? I know Toyota did many yrs back but I haven't had to do one for many yrs, electric fans took over and things inproved greatly.
And welcome to the forum Jamie, I see it's your first post.

Thanks Terry
I've been sitting on the side lines for a very long time enjoying reading all the comments I wasn't going to post until we sold the house and were on the road but have had a fair bit to do with the early patrols. I'm not sure if Nissan still sell it but we always got it from Toyota when mining or the dodgy way fill it full of sikaflex and let set. But with Nissan the engines are better with the long life coolant. As when Holden had the VL they ran their own coolant in it and had some issues with corrosion but Nissan had no dramas in the skyline using long life and they are the same engine. any way enough waffle from me.
