I understand and agree these are not to be used in vans etc but the people want to use some heater for the outside part of the tent, it only has a roof and floor, the walls are fly screen stuff so would that count?? These heaters are advertised as for outdoor use.

Anyone who camps or sleeps in a tent ..... especially in the winter deserves to freeze! lol
Thousands use gas heaters all over Aussie .......... just user beware & be careful.
Most houseboats use gas heaters in them through the winter. (might be why my hair is falling out?) LOL
Tell 'em to buy a double sleeping bag & get back to nature!

Their tent is warmer than the bus (till we put the genny on) they want a heater for when they have visitors ie happy hrs or they just want to be outside but away from the mozzies etc. They do understand the safety issues but asked which was the best out of the canister or gas bottle ones. No not the gas making hair fall out Bruce it is that old thing called "GETTING OLD" Double sleeping bag you must be kidding they have the ones that can be zipped together for those "nature visits" Come to think of it the gas heater you have would be ok but might take up a bit much space, do they make the same thing but smaller??

As far as a gas canister heater, if it's cold enough for a heater it is too cold for the butane to boil off the liquid in the canister, so the flame would be poor with very little heat. The gas in a refill bottle is Propane, Butane boils off at around 2*C, Propane boils off at -32*C, so a propane gas heater is the only one that will work properly.
The issue regarding gas heaters in enclosed areas, properly adjusted you are more likely to be asphyxiated as the gas heater uses up the oxygen and you just don't realise there is a problem, but yawning, runny nose and eyes and headache are all sure signs. A poorly tuned heater or using Autogas to refill the gas cyl is asking for a quick dose of carbon monoxide poisoning, no appliance designed to simply burn low pressure gas can be tuned to run on the mix that makes up autogas without producing lots of carbon monoxide because autogas is made up of all sorts of garbage the refinery wants to get rid of, it's cheap for a reason. Add to that there are no rules regarding what mix of butane/propane autogas must comply with, propane filled cyls and refillers must be 99% pure propane.
The flame of a well tuned heat has a small light blue cone with a clean tip and a darker blue flame around it also with a clean tip, double inner cones is not enough oxygen, a flicker or white tip to any of the cones is partly burnt gas that is producing enough carbon monoxide to kill very quickly in anything but an open area. Next time you are at a venue and they have those outside heaters, take a close look at the flame, if it's not perfect move away, it's not the beer that is causing the fuzzy thinking and headache.....
Use an unflued gas heater in any sort of enclosed area at your own risk.... and at the risk of anyone in the area with you.
