Always get a chuckle when I see the cyclist today on their way to work etc in their lycra.
When racing I could only wear my riding gear etc when racing except for the knickers with the chamois insert.
Never had the fancy gear, started on mothers bike including the shopping basket and then transition through second hand bikes and gear.I think the only new gear I had was a near pair of wheels my girl friends dad built for me before riding the Melbourne boards in the Australian Championships and then in one race we had the big fall and I was one of them and broke my collar bone and got many LARGE splinters in all parts of my body. They had to cut them out with a razor blade.
Even had to ride on smaller gears etc as my dad said I did not need the fancy gear if I was good enough. Gave up after a major fall whilst training at 70MPH and got sick of my dad giving me hidings (I stripped a nut changing gear to build the track bike into a road bike to race that weekend) was taking to me with the inner cable of a brake line. I dropped him three times before he gave up and I never put my leg over a bike till I was about 65.
How times change. Must admit my kids never got a hiding just a look and a chat used to do the trick
