Re: Port Wakefield -Strathalbyn
Unfortunately those two places are seperated by the Adelaide Hills so there's no real easy answer.
If you go down South rd you still have several big hills to climb anyway.
If it was me I'd pick a time when traffic is a bit light, (8-9PM?)use a gear lower than you really need & go straight out the freeway from Adelaide till you turn off to Strath.
The other way is out of the question really....... out & around through Palmer. Lot of turnoffs & still hilly anyway.

If you want to go for a wander & bypass Adelaide & the steep climb you can go via this route.
Be VERY VERY careful going down Palmer hill....... 2nd gear maybe? Sharp turn at the bottom to the right as well.

Thanks to both of you. We will definately not be travelling at night. The way the Boss has described was the way we came north when we left Strath last year.

No doubt Dot will have her say about this but you should be put in gaol if you don't leave Port Wakefield Road at Bolivar/Kings Road (BP on Port Wakefield Road, Paralowie) go North east Road, Paracombe Road, Cudlee Creek Road, Woodside Road, Onkaparinga Road, Junction Road, Adelaide Road to Mt. Barker then to Strath.
People come from around the world to travel those roads through the fabulous towns in the Adelaide Hills along that route.
Good road surface, some quite curvy sections but mostly undulating countryside. Allow much time for stops along the way. You'll wonder why someone didn't tell you about this before.

Back home now after a terrible meal. . If Ozefueler aka Steve can drive his monster rig along the Macclesfield road then BBA can do the hills route that Steve W suggested. On the other hand the hill through the tunnels isn't that bad if you drive gently, we did it in the bus before she had her turbo and all her mechanical bits & bobs done so BBA 's super tug should be cool..

Hope you've booked ahead at the Dottie & George van park, it's a busy place. Wonderful hosts and great scones, best get ear muffs for BBA though, you know Dottie and her ear whispering
