How Important is it to add healthy fats to your pets diet?

Post by Dot »

It’s essential to add healthy fats – Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) – such as Omega 3 into your pets diet for good health. Animals cannot produce EFAs on their own so must obtain them through their diet.
Two of these EFAs are Omega 3 and Omega 6. Both are vital components of the cell membrane of every cell in your pet’s body and the balance of these fatty acids on the cell membrane determines how the cell functions, so it is important we get the balance between these two acids right.

Omega 3, the facts...
Omega 3 helps regulate inflammation in your pet’s immune system.

It can also help to reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis and allergies and conditions of the bowel such as ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel disease (IBD).

Omega 3 deficiency, the facts...

If your pet’s Omega 3 and 6 EFAs are unbalanced, the biggest impact will be on their immune system and skin.

An excess of Omega 6 and a deficiency of Omega 3 (which is the situation with most cooked, processed pet foods) will result in a pro inflammatory, over-reactive immune system and cause abnormally strong reactions to normal or mild allergenic stimuli.
An Omega 3 deficiency can damage the outer layer of the skin causing skin and hair to become dry, flaky and brittle and allow bacteria to invade the skin and cause superficial infections and skin irritations. The result is a dry, flaky coat, with no shine and itchy skin.

Maintaining Omega 3 levels, the facts...

If you need to increase and restore your pet’s immune system, I recommend switching to a balanced raw meat diet with naturally occurring, balanced Omega 3 and 6 that has not been exposed to the cooking process.
You can add Omega 3 EFAs to your pet’s diet in the form of flax seed oil, fish oil, krill oil and those found in Vets All Natural Health Chew Training Treats, Flax Seed Oil, or Vets All Natural Omega Blend Oil which contains the levels of Omega 3 and 6 required for optimum pet health.
Queen of the Banal & OT chatter and proud of it. If it offends you then tough titty titty bang bang.
