4WD falls off barge on way to Fraser Island, sinks

Post by Lance »

A four-wheel drive has fallen off a barge heading to Fraser Island and sunk.
No one was inside at the time, but a group of backpackers on their way to the island for New Year's Eve lost their mobile phones, bank cards, passports and other valuables when the vehicle rolled out about between Inskip Point and Fraser Island, north of Brisbane, about 10:00am.

A very upsetting situation for those involved.
Someone's gonna get their bum kicked I think, why wasn't that tailgate up ?
Obviously the handbrake had not been applied correctly, but there should be a barrier for safety reasons surely.

Apparently (it has been reported) the handbrake was not applied correctly. Looks like not in gear either? I wonder if the barrier chain would have held?

No barrier chain and they didn't put the ramp up more than a couple of degrees by the look of it.

No handbrake holds if you don't put it on correctly.

If, as has been suggested the handbrake may not be effective, surely the drivers of the vehicle would have been aware of that prior to the ferry trip and should have taken extra precautions such as using the gearbox to help hold the vehicle.
That said, the ramp should have been up IMHO.

Several bums to be kicked and bank accounts to be dented...........
