Has any one had anything to do with these heat pump thingo's? I reckon our water heater may be on its way out and have been told these things are good ???

Dot I noticed that most of these new houses at the marina are all using those instant gas water heaters like most houseboats also use. OK, they use gas but you're not heating up hundreds of litres of water that most times just sits there losing temperature that has to be reheated over & over.

I had a go at looking these things up but half of it was mumbo jumbo and I thought it could be hooked to solar? Shall look at the instant gas if this heat pump thing is no good.

A friend has one,says it's ok for two people and he's happy with it.Check with the government,there may be an energy rebate on those.....................Peter.

I have a Bosch Instantaneous HWS in the bus and have had it for approx 12 years. I just replaced the ICU at a cost of $90? but other than that, no problems. Gas is only used when a tap is turned on.

Dot, the heat pump hot water things seem to be a thing of the past in this area. Mainly because they are failing, parts are breaking and replacement bits are unobtainable. The other negative is the noise. They really are quite loud, if located near to the house. My sister and most of her street in Singleton, had them installed about 10 years ago. All of them are being replaced with either the instantaneous gas numbers or solar tubes up on the roof. I can recommend the solar evacuative tube things (I think that's what they are called), because they are working well for us. But you may have other things to spend your hard earned on.

Dot, we converted from the normal hot water cylinder type thingy 10 years ago & opted for the instant gas on the outside of the house adjacent to the 2 bathrooms. Best thing we ever did... the shower takes about 7 seconds to supply the hot water.

The only negative is that the other end of the house with the kitchen & garage/laundry takes about 40-50 seconds to appear... hate to think how much water we wasted waiting for the hot stuff. Have considered putting a second unit in the garage to supply that end ... the cost then was $2700 fitted. Now it might be a bit cheaper & with the water restrictions starting over here on 1 June (Saturday) we don't wanna be wasting any water.

I would go for the evacuated tubes type heat exchanger on the roof, a stainless tank designed for recirculating the water through heat exchanger and back to the 3/4 mark on the storage tank. The hot water rises to the top, the cold water enters in the bottom and a low voltage element can be added into the bottom of the tank and a solar panel or two devoted to powering that heater element.
We ran this system on the house in Lake Illawarra, disconnected the mains power supply to the water heater and never ran out of hot water again.
If you have back to grid solar, you can sneak a bit of that out to the hot water, they pay bugga all for the power back to the grid yet charged a lot more for the power to run the hot water when they want to give it to you.
