Apparently told not to leave Birdsville by the police but headed out anyway.
As they supposedly have plenty of food and water they should just leave them there until it dries out.
Society has spent enough sending a plane from Victoria to drop a satphone and additional supplies. Give it a couple of weeks it will dry out and they can drive out.
Absolutely no point trying to recover the vehicle until the country dries out, they've already driven off the compacted track which is a not a good idea especially in a NP so no point in churning up any more country.

First, ask if they want to be rescued or are happy to wait it out until the area dries out and they can extract themselves.
If they do want to be rescued, head out there in chopper, pick them up and drop them at the nearest hospital for a check up .... then hit them with the bill for the rescue. Then they have to organise some where to live while the area dries out and some method of extracting their vehicle, at their cost .....

When we went to Boulia, Qld for the camel races which were cancelled owing to heavy rain, we intended coming home thru Birdsville but the Police closed the road via Birdsville, hefty fine for anyone disobeying the closure, maybe they will already be getting a fine. :?

I think the embarrassment of being on the national news after being told to stay put, will stay with them for a while.
But you just can't tell some people, can you.

I would expect people that take kids and pets with them into these areas may have some grey matter but apparently they don't. They should get the bills for every service they have used so far. No wonder the coppers get peed off with idiots like this lot.

We were caught in the rain north of Boulia, camped on the road for three days till the water disappeared.

The SA police picked them up this morning with a chopper and flew them out to Coober Pedy.
So now they have to organise how to get back to the truck when the country dries out. Accomodation and car hire etc will make it a very expensive exercise, would have been far cheaper to just sit it out until they could drive out, they had food and water and the threatened hot weather was only high 30's for few days and dry heat at that.
