Tank water in van tanks

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Tank water in van tanks

Post by Macca »

Can anyone tell me please what the additive is to clean out tanks that have had rain water added. Obviously not for me but a friend who has bought a van. Thanks

Is this a trick question? Isn't rain water clean?

SOme add pure chlorine or pure bleach to the tanks. It kills the bugs and after a day or so, the smell disappears and the bleach fades.

Are we talking about a fuel tank here?

If using Bleach:: about 50mls to 100L water.
If using pool chlorine:: about 10mls to 100L water.
You can use this every time you fill. Thats what the Councils use.

Thanks Peter. Algae grows in tanks if nothing put in with rain water.

We lived with rain water tanks on the farm for over 20 years & never saw any growth.
Bore water in open top tanks for stock water grew some but we used to hang old copper head gaskets in them to stop it.
Copper sulfate bags in the troughs saved some cleaning too.
A dose of bleach & a couple of flushes if it's wanted to be used soon.

I've had rain water sit in the buses tanks for over a year and no algae ever and the same with all our farm water tanks, some are well over 30 years old and never seen any algae or other growth in them. Of course if you live in an area that have a lot of air pollution, that may contribute to chemical growth, but that's just a guess.

My next door has fish in his troughs, they eat the Algae.
