and here is the original version of In-a-gadda-da-diva by the Iron Butterlies. The original song, so I am led to believe, was supposed to be called In The Garden of Eden, but the lead singer was so smashed that it came out all garbled and they thought it was In-A-Gadda Da diva. I remember going to my Uncles house for a barbecue when I was only young and he had just bought this "fantastic" record, that he proceeded to play quite loud. It was the album by the Iron Butterlies with this song on it. It was extremely different music to what I had been used to hearing, and my mother was not impressed by it either. Complained all the way home about Uncle Norm and his "new taste in music". She thought it was bloody horrible!!!!

It was the first established recording of heavy metal, Steppenwolf didn't record Born to be wild until after In A Gadda Da Vida was released. The name doesn't actually translate to anything, it was just that the spiritual mystic phase was in at the time and Garden of Eden didn't quite match the weirdness of the demo track, possibly it was the sound engineer that gave it that title, no one really knows but it stuck. The actual recording was a demo warm up to get sound levels etc correct but it came out so well they didn't do a second recording, it was so long they considered it was just something they had to get out of their heads so they could go on and do the other tracks, they considered it would be one of those things that remained a “B” side throw away. Probably the most famous heavy metal track recorded, second would be Born to be Wild, but only because it featured in the movie Easy Rider.
A bit like Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick, the quality is some what ordinary but it still has become legendary.

If you have one of the legendary vinyl copies no doubt you have back tracked it. The most famous back track recoding is Stairway to Heaven, that is really mind bending because you can’t pick any of it when listening to the track the forward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGaEgsvzp8o
