GIRT’s Successor(s)

Post by Greynomad »

We’re finally OTR with GIRT’s replacement/s.
Motive power is provided by a 2021 Isuzu MU-X.
Turbo diesel 3 litre, auto trans, 4WD.
Accomodation is a 2018 Snowy River SR-18, a semi-offroader retrofitted (previous owner) with twin AGM batteries, two solar panels, a grey water tank and minor interior electrical tweaks.
So far we have recorded an average 6.2km/l towing, and 12.2 without the van.
Isuzu is very comfortable touring, even with the van behind, and has plenty of room in the back for the girls. Even when they have to share the space with two folding chairs, a folding table, a generator and a folding ramp (greyhounds don’t jump)!

(The outdoor enclosure for the girls travels on the bed.)

That looks good Ray. Did the girls settle into the ramp routine ok?

Now you need more solar and lithium batteries so you don't have the generator to cart around and it doesn't run out of fuel or over heat just when you need it most 8-)

As far as lithium/inverter/solar systems go, you can have good, reliable, cheap, correctly prices, expensive, unreliable, not what the label claimed capacity ...... pick any two and see what you will end up with, the aim is it still works like the first yr after 10 yrs, so that should help with the selection process ;) our early systems are now in their 12th yr and still performing the way they were designed, some on their third owner now, the others still with their original owner and still on the road 24/7 ....... a line in the sand for the purposes of comparing one system with another .....

Kelly’s much more confident using it, although she still has to use her claws a bit for traction.
Megs is very nervous about the ramp, and needs lots of help & encouragement. But she’s OK with the two steps into the van.
I suspect Bandit’s demonstration helped Kelly a lot. 😜

Ray, we put that non slip stuff that you get from the cheap shops. Cut to size and a bit of contact adhesive. Instant traction. It helped Bandit with his confidence.

David,
Ramp is hard plastic, not so good for traction.
I glued some rubber-backed carpety-style mats from the Big Green Hammer shop to it.
Problem solved.

As requested, Dottie

Obviously not in travel mode… more ‘cleaning after the trip’ mode. 😀

T1,
What do you reckon it would cost to go lithium?

Tanks,
We followed up on the info you sent, and we have bought the slightly larger version.
Pics will follow when it arrives…

Looks good Ray, is that ceiling material a sort of padded vinyl? The bus I'm doing at the moment has a very similar look with the curved cupboards and the lights in the ceiling, but in two tone grey for the vinyl parts, the other bits, the upright parts are a sort of metallic grey
