Re: Lock down
Terry, you used the phrase NIMBY previously, and it got me thinking.
Most people wouldn't be aware of how fortuitous we were here in Bendigo regarding the onset of the pandemic. immediately prior to the outbreak, our new billion-dollar hospital had just opened, leaving our old hospital empty and awaiting destruction.
When the pandemic hit, our health department immediately reopened the old ICU ward, plus a couple of general wards. All of the older model beds and ventilators had been left behind so much of the needed equipment was already there.
The old emergency department was turned into a covid testing site and the ambulance entrance into a drive-through testing area.
That same area is now used for vaccinations.
It occurred to me that this old hospital would surely be a good starting point for a quarantine site. Parts of it are negative pressure. It's 3 stories high so plenty of room.
Our airport receives flights from Sydney regularly so that must mean it's big enough to handle the job.
Can anyone think of any aspect I haven't thought about in using it for this purpose? I'm not hopeful of Scotty from marketing contributing anything to Andrews to build his new dream quarantine facility. But with a building already built, would we need his financial help?
I'm basically thinking out loud here. Anyone care to join me.

Re: Lock down
To get ScMo and his crew moving as far as purpose built quarantine facilities, we need to put him and his staff on security detail at one of the Covid hotels and tell them not to breath the air because the ventilation isn't up to the task .... then tell them the new variant isn't slowed by the vaccine .... that might be a bit of a fib but nothing compared to the scale of the bubbles of crap that come out of Canberra .......
We the announcement of a gas fired power station that isn't needed anyway because double the capacity of the Liddell unit is already being built at the existing Tallawarra gas fired peaking generator with the govt already footing part of the bill https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/news/e ... 00%20homes.) Clearly money isn't the problem if they are happy to waste $$ on a gas powered plant that isn't needed but does win votes.
Let's face it, if there were votes to be bought by building or re-purposing existing sites for dedicated quarantine fcilities, we would have had them already ...... The only $$ this govt will commit to anything must be tied to getting re-elected next term .......

Not just this Gov! Happens whoever is in at the time.
The biggest problem we have where we live Terry is that we are in a safe seat so there's no need for any promises or, indeed, any expenditure what so ever. The lucky ones live in swinging seats. Eden Monaro is a good one to live in.

Re: Lock down
Why should Tas, who has done the best of all states in keeping the virus out, subject itself to doing the job other states have failed to do. I made a mistake when I said they hadn't used the Pontville barracks, they used it for some refugees and also 1500 pacific island workers who came into the country awhile back to quarantine when they came fruit picking.T1 Terry wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 3:37 pmthe fools here who have a wonderful ready to go quarantine facility just outside Hobart, but they are using hotels.
Well if it's not for the money and you feel that Tassie could cope better if they used the specially built quarantine facility near Hobart, why don't we fly all the overseas arrivals to Hobart and use that facility. That would keep them out of the big city hotels and make a great natural border protection so the mainland doesn't keep having these flare ups causing lock downs. Limit travellers out of Tassie to those who have had both jabs and have a negative test result before boarding the boat or a plane.
It might even kill two birds with the one stone. The Tasmanian's are regularly complaining they have been priced out of their own property market because the cashed up mainlanders move over there and pay the high asking prices. It would make Tassie a less desirable place for the older mainlanders to retire and might even make some who have moved there think twice about it and sell up for what ever they can get and move back to the mainland. The other plus is the federal govt would be paying big $$ into the community and that would stay in Tassie boosting the economy .....
What do you think of that idea NP?

Our hotel quarantine security is handled by Tas army reserves and the main hotel they are using, is out of hobart near the airport away from populated areas and businesses. We also have international travellers quarantining here, they include Tasmanians returning home from overseas if they can't provide private quarantine. Most are quarantining in their homes, as my lady will when she can get out of Sweden, which has it's borders closed. As do a lot of European countries,

Re: Lock down
NIMBY at its best Surely Tassie could do with the extra $$ and being such a friendly state I thought they would be glad to have them there and stuck there till they are out of quarantine and have had their 2 jabs etc .... if they don't want the jabs, first plane back to where ever they came in from .... but I'd assume the requirement before even getting on the plane out of where ever would be to agree to the jabs and put up a bond equal to the return flight back and $$ to cover the quarantine costs that would go into the Tassie govt revenue ...... They are advertising on the mainland TV to get people down there in the off season, this would be the perfect opportunity to get the $$ from people who can't leave ..... If the place is that good, surely they would do the tourist thing while waiting between jabs ...... gotta be a winner NP .....native pepper wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 2:29 pmWhy should Tas, who has done the best of all states in keeping the virus out, subject itself to doing the job other states have failed to do. Re: Lock down
Would not have the problem if they did not bring anyone in till things settle down. If the country they wish to be leaving have current infections then sorry bad luck we are closed. This includes all the bleeding heart over paid sports people and actors etc. If you left after the warning in early of the year then Also bad luck. The small financial loss from the people not coming in is nothing compared to the cost of the lock downs caused by these people returning
