New install for lithium battery

Post by blacksheep »

I have some questions about lithium batteries, My camper in the making has 2 x cranking batteries for 12v power at the moment, charged by a second alternator, i run LED lighting, charge phone & i pod. The fridge runs of 240v (it's an Engle 80L upright 12/240 volt). I would like to add a TV & DVD player/ stereo, run the fridge on 12v when away from power. Also i charge batteries from a projector 15 amp 3 stage charger, no solar as yet.
Before i take the plunge and buy AGM,s, it would be a good time to think Lithium, I'm thinking 100A/H would be a good starting point, they can be added to later as $$$$ allow. ????????. After reading all the posts on the forums it seems a dingo controller and panels are the next $pend.

Perhaps T1 and others could enlighten me further.

Trevor.

Welcome to the forum Trevor, a pantec conversion, I bet every motorhome builder/converter has looked at a pantec truck and thought about the possibilities 8-) The luxury of square walls and easy under floor access and a full flat floor, a builders dream
Tell me more about the electrics, is the truck 12v or 24v? Is the second alternator the same voltage as the truck?

Hi Terry, the truck is 24v, House batteries are 12v charged by a VT commodore 100 amp alternator. (worked in the auto dismantling game for 18 years).

Is that one of the alternators that when the alternator light bulb blew the alternator stopped charging? Might be able to utilise that feature.

Ok tested alternator today, with warning light connected at start up, charge at 14.3v, if you then disconnect light it keeps charging.
with light disconnected at start up, alternator will not charge,13.2v.

Bugga, once it's energised it holds it's own field, need to work out a voltage booster circuit to feed to the battery voltage sense wire to cause the internal regulator to back off the charge current.

A 24v inverter and a battery charger would be so much easier
