That's what I learnt to drive in. We just drew a black line around the L in the LTD. front and rear sign writing. Only one seat others sat on blankets we used for packing furniture in. Windscreens were not even safety glass. Good luck with the project. Of course keep the Pommy theme good old Gardiner L6 that'll do just fine.

do you know what size engine they had originally??? I haven't decided what heart to put in yet. lots of choices lol

More likely a four cyclinder motor little car cortina , early stuff 1960 alot of ford only had 2 ltr ok

They had a 4 cyl - OHV 2.2 ltr motor.
I think it was a variant of the A90 ( Austin A90 ) motor
Hooked up to a 4 speed / 3 Syncro box.
Brakes would have been the usual 2 wheel cyl affair that a lot of the BMC were using in those days.
The motors ran Very Hot and suffered from fuel line vapours.

I'd be putting a small 2ltr turbo diesel in to power it hooked up to a 5/6 speed box and thoroughly reworking the brakes etc.

From memory they weren't all that good on Grunt and as they didn't get up to any higher speeds it didn't matter the brakes weren't all that good

2.6 litre 4 cylinder Same a A90 and Austin Atlantic and Austin Healy 100/4. Single Zenith Carb. 4 speed box syncro on 2,3, & 4. Brakes were a joke we used have to adjust them weekly. Top speed was 60 MPH on a good day. The one we used had a gvm of 3 tons. We used to regularly have 4 to 5 tons in the back. I would be going for a 4 or 5 cyl diesel with an auto box behind it. A 2 litre turbo would be struggling severely. There are many around at reasonable prices. You have a big project ahead.

thanks peter, that is great info. its looking like all ford gear at this stage.
302, C4 and 9inch diff, disc brakes. speed and pulling power wont be a worry then lol.

we had a TC cortina quite a few years ago and that thing used to get up and boogie!!! was a bitch to drive on dirt roads though, the back would fishtail all over the place even at lower speeds.

I hope you check this van out thoroughly for rust Anne Marie, and be sensible, it is easy for the heart to rule the head, but if there is heaps of rust in it, the structural integrity of the van could be compromised and it will take a fortune to cut out the rust and put new metal in.
Please be sensible - it looks pretty far gone in the photos to be honest
