What regulator are you running Dirk? I've been playing with a system that switches a 600w element on in the base of the 250ltr hot water cyl when the batteries reach the end of boost mode, just before it switches to absorption mode. If there is more solar than the 50 amps the element uses, the regulator progresses on to absorption mode and the float mode. If the solar is not quite up to the task the voltage drops and the relay driving the element opens till the volttage increases.

G'Day Terry,
One of your favorites, Morning Star 60amp MPPT..... HWS is only 22lts. so not really a storage unit at all just an on demand sort of thing. I like the idea of switching it over manually as Bruce said if I bother with the idea of powering it. Guess it all depends on the gas demand and how long it takes to heat the water from cold. According to the manual 20mins.

Almost right Dirk. If you look closely. that red reset button isn't a button at all. It's just a 'trouble light'.
Mine just has a 240V light switch from Buntings. A couple of bucks and easy to replace if need be. (less than 10A)

I noticed the re-set didn't push in, figured it might have popped out if there was a fault and you just pushed it back in to reset. Wouldn't mind a white switch if any one has any ideas where to source one. Would match the Suburban switch then.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10x-Snap-in- ... 4aba9611f5
$6
But remember it's 240V so the back of the switch should be in a 'protected' place where fingers can't reach.

Good work, hadn't had a chance to look at ebay but that switch would match up beside the suburban switch. No problems with insulating the back its going to go into a switch board type arrangement. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions crew, appreciated.

Hahahah, Terry thought you would be impressed. To get liths up to 24v was a very expensive exercise to say the least. Plus I was having trouble getting my head around all the detail. The MPPT reg. was the recommendation of another member very early in the process, but happy either way here.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
Yes Peter.
For power points & lights.
Have you seen the wiring diagram for the hot water systems we're referring to?
From my manual is shows the wiring similar to a switch wire like I believe a room with 2-way switches.
Of course any worthy electrician could change the wiring over to 'double pole' switching.
Do you reckon all the thousands of old caravans and motorhomes should be changed over? (double pole)
Probably a bit like when seatbelts were introduced. If manufactured before (date) they don't need them.
