Re: Lithium Batteries, who has them?
Hi Craig,Craig wrote:I think I have said this before but when I went into EV Works they told me that discharging lithium batteries fully would cause permanent damage and destroy the battery. Is this not the case?
There is a difference between discharged to 0% SOC and fully discharged. At 0% all the advertised capacity has been used out of the battery, but the cell voltages will still be 3.0v or better, so 12v at the terminals or better, yet the battery is at 0% SOC. If you drag the cells below 2v you start to risk damage, to 0v and hold them there you will destroy the cell. The reason for this is the natural electrical energy produced from the combination of chemicals within the cell will generate around 2v, if you continue to use this electrical energy the materials within the cell start to sacrifice themselves in an attempt to maintain the 2v, this will continue until all the sacrificial material is exhausted, the cell is stuffed beyond recovery by this stage.

Watched the program about the disappearance of that Malaysian air craft in march and they said it was carrying lithium batteries that have been known to burst into flames Q/ how does this effect their use in RV's?? and also my original Q about what happens if there is no sun for a week or so during winter?

Dot, The doomsayers will always invent something bad about new technology. The battery that has caused more fires than any other is the lead/ acid battery. They make hydrogen gas when being charged and are fairly violent if enough of the gas comes into contact with an ignition source. Most cars produced in the last 60 years have them but generally they are regarded as safe.Dot wrote:Watched the program about the disappearance of that Malaysian air craft in march and they said it was carrying lithium batteries that have been known to burst into flames Q/ how does this effect their use in RV's?? and also my original Q about what happens if there is no sun for a week or so during winter?
Most good lithium systems will have a low voltage cut-out or alarm to alert or prevent further use until recharged. That's when you breakout the genset and recharge them same as we do now.

Different chemistry. LiFePO4 are nothing like those involved. They are safe except in the most extreme circumstances.Dot wrote:Watched the program about the disappearance of that Malaysian air craft in march and they said it was carrying lithium batteries that have been known to burst into flames Q/ how does this effect their use in RV's?? and also my original Q about what happens if there is no sun for a week or so during winter?

Dot solar panels will give some charge in almost any weather conditions. Only a very dark sky as you might see during a brief thunderstorm will result in no charge at all. I've been amazed at times just how anything at all is being generated.
If it's a dull day you don't vacuum the carpets or cook a roast!
Panels have reduced in price that much over the years that if an one has the room it is foolish not to put some extra ones up. (or out? ... portable like Chuckie)
I thought you have solar on your house?

What is this thing you call vacuum?
Portable solar panels = no where to store them
Yep have some solar on the house only got a refund of $100 over the 3 mths we were away.
