It has 5 forward and one reverse Dot, and can anybody answer what does 3200rpm rated speed mean? Is that maximum revs perhaps? The number is on the sticker on the rocker cover.

That is the governed max RPM, there will be another figure at a much lower RPM referring to max torque. Some where between the lower figure and half way between that figure and the 3,200rpm, usually about half way, is the best fuel economy range, 3,200rpm the best performance but worst fuel economy and the lower figure the best fuel economy but the performance of a slug, and you would need twice as many gears to avoid dropping off the peak torque revs and needing to go back 2 gears to catch it again. The joys of a high revving but slightly under powered diesel, you are never quite sure if you are driving it or rowing it via the gear leverbobk wrote:It has 5 forward and one reverse Dot, and can anybody answer what does 3200rpm rated speed mean? Here's a picture Bernie, 0-600 small divisions, 600-2500 yellow/green, 2500-3200 black, 3200+ red.

Re: Bob K's HINO RB
Maybe 1500rpm to 2500rpm might be a realistic economy type power band with the odd trip up to 3,000rpm to grab the next gear when needed. I can't imagine much performance being available under 1,000rpm from such a small capacity engine. The 380cu Ford engine has a solid green section between 1400rpm and 2,100rpm and dotted green up to 2,500rpm and the red starts at 3,000rpm to 3,500rpm but against the governor it's flat out at 2,800rpm and if you let it died down to 1,400rpm it better be as it went over the crest of the hillbobk wrote:Here's a picture Bernie, 0-600 small divisions, 600-2500 yellow/green, 2500-3200 black, 3200+ red.
