You kidding? Do you think that they rented it for free? Doubt it. Hopefully they did take out insurance cover.
That cover it on the Ferry? [KT does]

If it was a rental, who knows who it might have been insured with.

Perhaps an enterprising SCUBA diver might have other ideas...
Just sayin'... ;)

if it was an insured rental it would no doubt have a hefty excess, normally as they don't have the money it is cheaper and easier to hop on a plane to another country, however in this case with all their paperwork, credit cards, and no doubt passports in the keeping of Davy Jones, then they just claim that the hand brake did not work! therefore the fault of the hire company, let the lawyers sort that out, we are on holiday, and don't understand English.we paid insurance not my fault. etc etc.
Life is a trip, to be enjoyed!

There will still be that "hefty" excess. Straight off the credit card

Depends on the credit card limit.

I know in the houseboat hiring game the credit card has already been 'authorized' & then cancelled (or refunded) if not used.
I'm sure the vehicle hiring companies would have their butts covered!
