It is a sad fact of life that some people don't understand the concept of earning money to buy what they think they want. Having said that, all the van parks in Dubbo have huge waring signs everywhere, telling customers to make sure they lock up anything of value. So my thinking is the car must have been a big lemon and they were expecting the culprits to lose steam very quickly and be caught. Obviously this did not happen.
