Well, now the flaming has finished I'll tell you what I have got.

I use an iPad with bluetooth GPS thingo so I have a full gigantic screen even I can read using SYGIC, but TOM TOM, Garmin and other GPS systems are available as apps.

It talks to my iMac and you can down load routes and POI easily.

This of course does not prevent:

* forgetting to follow instructions visual and audio (especially when you have turned the sound off or are excitingly chatting about the destination nearby) when entering large cities or even small sea side towns.
* punching in the wrong destinations
* when the GPS goes haywire and loses signal cause you have it on the dashboard with large Luton overhanging the bonnet and in a forest area and wants you to turn left off a two lane highway onto a fire track. (note to self - find better place to mount bluetooth thingo on roof for better reception.)
* programmed waypoint when "She" keeps on wanting you to do a U turn even though you have reach and moved on from the waypoint
* when its offered destination is wrong, putting a Caravan Park in the middle of a seaside town which happens to be going a massive roadwork program only to find out the park is 2km the other side of town no where near the roadworks.

But apart from that we really wouldn't be without our GPS.

Sorry about the 'flaming' Russell! My comments were mostly aimed at the map 'maker' or provider.
Garmin, I think, have only recently started using Google maps to their detriment.
I'm very interested in which of the apps you mention you do use & who provides the maps for that app?
I'll post a screen grab here shortly showing two roads that 'she' tries to avoid although they are major roads that the people of the area use.
There must be hundreds in other areas as well.
iGo8 didn't have the same faults in their maps.

Sygic is an excellent Navigator, probably the best I have tried.

I have been testing Sygic, OsmAnd,Navigon, OruxMaps, Locus, Navigator to mention a few.

They all have their good/bad points.

I prefer using a Mapping Service (Locus Maps) and storing GeoWiki POIs which is very straightforward (select POIs via the Browser, download to GPX, and Locus automatically stores them. From there I can select any one of the Navigators.

I use a Galaxy 7 TAb 2. They are selling below $200 from BigW, JBHiFi etc, and coupled with a Screen Mount ($12 off eBay) they make a great Navigator, 7 inch screen for old eyes and I get to use it for everything else a Tablet is good for.

Navigator is good (and free) , but Sygic is best when out of phone range.

Hope I'm not off topic...this also holds true for Mac.

Its a full blown GPS system with its own maps, regularly updated through APP store on iTunes
