I wish to purchase a good reliable (hence, not cheap) dashcam. I got two off evilharbour at $70 each I think, but threw them out because they were not up to scratch.

So, my request is for recommendations from those who have tried and proven units around $250 or less - or am I dreaming as he said in the Castle?

Dawg, check out this site www.visiondrive.net.au, they seem to be a quality unit and the company is based in Australia. I have emailed the company for prices but no response as yet.
I have no connection at all with the company but am just interested in getting a dashcam.

Very odd not having the prices on the PDF download. They must monitor the exchange rate very closely.

Didn't have the patience waiting for the video to load so I bailed out.

We've been using one of http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FULL-HDMI-10 ... 4ab69a4de4 from Ebay for the last 4 1/2 months during our current travels in the US and Canada. It has so far recorded 1.5 terrabytes of footage which I've downloaded to the hard drive every couple of days. A typical days travel results in up to 11-13 Gb of footage if travelling most of the day. If you don't want to download it it just overwrites it when the space on the SD card is used up.
Fellow travellers with a Go Pro II were shattered when I showed them the footage have since gone out and bought one as it is far easier to use, has just as good a picture and switches on and off automatically when you stop and start the car.
I use a 32gb SD card in ours and it will easily store two days worth, possibly three if not driving all day.
I have a cheaper $30 SD version at home in Oz that has run faultlessly for over 12 months so far.

I just ordered one, for the price they are going for it is worth a try. I will let everyone know what I think when I receive it and try it out.

Well I have the camera and I have tried it out and to sum it up it has been a frustrating experience that I will put down to experience. :x :x

Apparently there are a lot of Chinese copies out there and that is what I have got. The camera does give good vision when it works but about ten minutes into the trip it has a brain fade and locks up and the only way of resetting it is removing the battery. When you remove the battery you lose all the date and time settings. The loop function does not work as it starts a new file any time between 20 seconds and 120 seconds. My advice to anyone thinking about getting a dash camera through ebay or the like do your research, but you do get what you pay for.

I have now ordered a camera from an Australian company called OnSiteCameras in Melbourne. Their cameras are made for them in China and they give an Australian 12 month warranty, and the camera is true HD. This camera costs $268 but I have higher expectations for this camera and it does not preform I will be sending it back.

Wish me luck :) :)

Dot, the camera does work for a short period before it locks up so they would argue that there is nothing wrong with it but it not really suited for purpose. I will be racking it up to experience. We all purchase these cheap items from ebay knowing that we could be getting a dude so that is the chance we take. Now that I have done more research I believe I could pick the camera knock offs but I can't be bothered I will just pay a couple of hundred dollars and get one that should be fit for purpose.

Glenn did you try it with the 12V power lead? The only time I'd use it with battery power would be to film something away from it's standard position.
