Do you think you'd turn a different colour is you were stuffed in a dark pantry for a week and then plonked on the supermarket counter with a demand for a refundDot wrote:Today we took the bag of spuds back to the supermarket, they had gone even greener yet I had left them in the dark pantry for the week since we bought them. The girl just said Oh very sorry about that and refunded the $$. Q/ Why do spuds go greener even when they are in the dark & a well ventilated area?

Re: Green spuds, to eat or not to eat?
I wasn't green I was bloody red with anger at them selling green spuds to start with, I take things back for a refund as I am sick of throwing their useless produce in the bin. I did ring and tell them about the green spuds the day I bought them but wasn't going to take them back with a 52k round trip. On the bag that the spuds were in it said to store them in a well ventilated dark place which I did. Q/ What do you people do when you get substandard or useless produce?

The pink and dark red spuds bake nice.
Depends whats a cost of t h e dud product. In your case, if I had the space I would have planted them and got more than my $$ back

On the bag it said they were not suitable for planting. I used to get spuds from the eye's that went into the compost but now I have a spud tower, a tall pipe that I top up with soil when the spuds start to peep through. I would say that at $4.99 a kilo that is not a cheap spudola.

I dunno what the fuss is all about, my packet of Deb potatoes never shows any green stuff or any signs of sprouting so I guess its a better brand of potato.!

Once they have started going green, the damage is done and they deteriorate a lot quicker.Dot wrote: Q/ Why do spuds go greener even when they are in the dark & a well ventilated area?
Sprouting is usually OK, just rub the sprouts off and enjoy the rest.
My spuds come from the garden and I leave them in the ground until needed, only digging up a weeks supplies at a time.
As long as the ground doesn't dry out and crack, they keep quite well.
Our farmers market and local fruit shop has a good supply of decent spuds when we run out.
It's a long time since I have had to resort to Woolies/Coles spuds.

That is a good idea Jim , just digging up what you need when you need them. I have planted a few so will see how we go and I will keep them well covered..

Green spuds from the duopoly are at least 12 months old and have been stored, just like all their food. As Jim says, leave spuds in the ground until you need them, the variety of spuds in Tas is amazing. Love pink eyes, Kennebec make wonderful chips and dutch creams fabulous mashed spud. There are purple, red and yellow spuds and different varieties for different times of the year, so fresh spuds are always available.
I never go to coles or woollies, their supposed fresh foods are old junk and everything else is imported rubbish. I've found smaller shops are much cheaper with real fresh quality and farmers markets in Tas are brilliant.
Old tyres make great spud growers, you put some soil and a spud in a tyre, when it sprouts you add another tyre and more soil. I have tyres 6 high and they produce heaps of spuds which the last owners established and am using spuds from last season still in the tyres. To get the spuds, all you do is remove one tyre and they fall out, then you reuse the tyres for the next 20 years.
