could we use one of these (its pretty big, 3000w) to pump the smoke back in to old inverters?

Only if you can get the correct inverter smoke, Lucas had a kit for putting the smoke back into their wiring harnesses and components but they were different part numbers, the adapter was the tricky bit, they were a genuine factory tool only, not even released to the dealerships.

While the FET's have very little current draw, the majority is in the DC-DC convertor. The bigger, the less effiecent under light loads.

To get the idea working, you progressively need to 'turn on" seperate DC-DC sections. The cost and size will be the challenge.


An alternative is to use multiple Grid tie micro inventors and progressively switch them on.
That was the idea I was looking at, but removing a lot of the unnecessary stuff required to change the solar input to the suitable voltage and rather have that at the common DC input stage, then have a method of sensing load that could turn on the next 1 or 2 in the chain as the load increased but drop them off are the load dropped back to a manageable size for less inverters to operate more efficiently. The problem I see is the clock on the microwave requires next to no power, but the moment it is switched on at full load multiple inverters would need to be switched on, come up to operating voltage and then supply the output required, inverters don't start up well under load.
