Have the potholes doubled in the few seconds between each post ..... You need the Roman's to come and build a proper road

Saw this on another forum https://www.thecarconnection.com/overvi ... fd0a1c0e10
wonder how long before they reach Australia in right hand drive? This bit looked interesting
Might need the long version of the 5er to fit all the solar panels required

Nearly enough to tow a 5er or one of those fully optioned monsters that seem to be hitting the road these days, yet still called a caravan.A 135-kwh battery pack powers the four motors that make more than 800 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque.

Re: An electric camper base?
Although it seems that EV's will become the done thing in the future I have reservations about all that lithium power surviving a decent crash and not shorting out and catching fire.
Then the fireies hosing it down
I have been considering an EV when eventually I retire from vanning and move to the next phase, a drive to the chalet
But so far ( although I'm not considering being a stand-in for a Crash Test Dummy ) the thought of some numpty who's playing with the "entertainment centre" in their nice new vehicle T boning me as I drive on my casual way to some destination, knocking me unconscious and the batteries doing a massive meltdown doesn't actually appeal to me all that much.
I suppose there were the same thoughts about petrol, and it seems that in nearly every movie they all explode in a ball of fire

Re: An electric camper base?
The nay sayers said the same thing about LPG powered vehicles back in the 70's. The fire brigade used to go through a massive procedure to exhaust all gas in the tank. Now they just turn off the gas tap.

I wonder how RAC breakdown service will handle a vehicle running out of battery power

Re: An electric camper base?
They all have one and all emergency crash crews know where the breaker switch is located. It actually breaks the circuit part way through the battery pack, there is a fuse as part of that breaker switch so even if there was a short circuit, the fuse would blow first.
The likes of Tesla batteries have a fusable link on the negative end of each cell, an over load of any cell results in that cell being isolated. There is an episode on Electric Samba where he tests a module under load to failure point to verify the actual current load the fusable links fail.
The risk of a fire caused by the lead acid battery shorting out in an accident is far greater than the battery in an EV shorting out, that is why the first responders disconnect the battery as the very first action at an accident .... that is because the 12v lead acid start battery doesn't have any fusable links internally or to the main starter cable ......
Ever watched the fire mobs try to put out a diesel fire when a truck crashes or just catches fire? If being burnt alive in a fire after an accident scares you, don't drive a diesel fuel vehicle because those fires are near impossible to put out.
As far as a point the EV drive battery can be linked to an inverter to supply 240vac, already part of the design in just about every EV produced after 2020, designed to allow the EV to share power back to house in peak demand periods.

Re: An electric camper base?
Same way they handle anything that isn't a flat tyre or run out of fuel, call a tow truck
Can you picture a diesel powered vehicle parked up in a rest area refuelling its tanks from sunshine? Just not gunna happen is it, but not real hard to imagine an EV powered motorhome or even a large caravan, parked up for few days while the battery recharges. You don't need a full 100% recharge to get to the next recharging spot, just like the RAC doesn't come out and fill the fuel tank when you run out of fuel ....
