Just remembering…
Time was when the ARDC ran the (then) 500, drivers wanted to do a victory lap.
ARDC said “NO! The farmers are locked in long enough. Gotta let them get back to business asap.”
Aerial view today shows about half the flat land behind Pit Straight is taken up with pit crew vehicles & accommodation ranging from tents to monster motorhomes, and behind them a paddock full of spectators’ similar accommodation. 🤭😳
Where are the farmers? I note that one of the former farmhouses on Mountain Straight is now a hotel/BnB!
Multi storey hotel on Conrod Straight (I suspect it is on the site of the old drive-in cinema?).
And of course the Kink in Conrod,to reduce the terminal speed at Hell (now Murray’s) Corner from suicidal to merely insane.
Also remember the local Rozzers used to come up to the mountain to slip bags over the speed limit signs on the morning of race day so practice & the race could be legal. 😁
My, how things have changed since the ‘Sixties, when my Dad backed his ute up to the three-strand wire fence on pit straight with the back seat from a sedan in the ute tub so we could watch in comfort. (With just a Thermos of tea & some sangers for the day’s refreshments.) 😀

Yes Ray we did the same, camped in a tent up on the mountain Saturday was the motorbikes and Monday was the cars [Easter then]. I have just spent a few days with my nephew at Brightwaters [Lake Macquarie] watched most of yesterday but left this morning so he could watch in peace. He is an ex racing driver having raced a two door Subaru WRX with "paddles" for gear changes, fully done out with pit crew including pit girls supplied by the sponsers. His name is Sean Holmes and lived in Melbourne then.
Now lives on the lake edge with a 41' Rivera tied up at the wharf. Unfortunatly I can't climb into boats anymore so we had to drive to the marina for lunch.

What a great race. Great to see Lee Holdsworth do such a great job as the co driver, and Chaz Mostert admitting he had to change his driving style after laminating a tyre. The crew certainly built a very fast car, so a lot of the congratulations has to go to them as well.
Only in Australia would they bring out a safety car for an echidna on the track, and thumbs up to the officials for doing it and all the drivers for avoiding it in the middle of a bend.

And my nanna nappy lives another Bathurst
The best for me was the great camera work and the easy to understand explanations of the new stuff from Mark S, how things have changed.Did you enjoy the race Bobr ;) (Sept 2017.) Q/ I want to do one of those V8 ? fast laps before too long Has anyone done this and where do you find out about it?? Don't really want to do it with just any Joe Blob but one of the Holden boys????

Dottie,
I was given a gift certificate for a ride in a super modified sedan at Calder Raceway for my 50th (just last week ).
However, I’m not sure Calder is still operating. Creeping urbanisation may have doomed it, as happened to Point Cook RAAF base.
Try The Bend racetrack near Murray Bridge…

ps. Great race! Always throws a curve ball at someone. This year it was Gizzy’s turn. Mostert obviously has a great future.
