Lived with chip heaters quite a bit when young, they are wonderful water heaters and so cost effective, just pick up some twigs and sticks, a couple of minutes later you've got piping hot water in the bath. My gran used to light it when she was doing the washing and was the hot water runner, the bathroom was the other side of the house to the laundry, which was under the house dug into the hill. Carrying a bucket of really hot water down a muddy track had it's hazards, especially if you slipped down the hill. :o
