Dave,
If you look closely, all the weeds are wearing tiny green overcoats.

Kikuyu grass doesn't fair well up here...to hot and takes a lot of water...up here if it's green in the winter it's a weed making it easier to eradicate...I use Kamba M doesn't kill the grass only the weeds...
Bernie.

So, why do the weeds still grow when it's too cold for the grass to grow?
It's only classed as a weed because it is the strongest plant and grows rapidly ..... goats don't consider any of them as weeds, they all taste the same to a goat

T1,
My favourite definition of a WEED is,
“Any plant growing where you don’t want it is a weed.”

We have these plants that seem to spring up on their own, many different colour flowers from yellow to orange, purple, a blueish one, white .... they are all self-sown along the sides of the road around Mannum and in the house front yard. Hit them with the mower and within a few days, new leaves and a new spray of flowers, a bit of water, new flowers .... yet the locals try to poison them or dig them out of their gardens

yet everything around them requires tireless effort to keep alive ..... We have those broad leaf cactus sort of plants that put up the big flowering branch as their dying effort, they grow with or without assistance as well. We saw one that had been dug up on the side of the road and we thought it was there for someone to pick up ..... 3 weeks later, it was still there, so I picked it up and dug a hole for it in the garden .... it now has around 5 heads that have appeared around the original ..... it doesn't seem to worried about the climate or house fires or even getting watered .......
I guess some would call them weeds, we call them members of a Covill garden, even we can't kill them with neglect

Dunno the answer to that one, young Dorothy. It's been called weed ever since I can remember. First heard it called that in the mid 60's. Maybe some really old person knows.
