Why not put it into top gear with the handbrake/maxibrake on?

Bernie, get a big bar, and a hydualic jack. Lift the end of the bar up using the jack. This will turn the nut or lift the bus.
Between the bus chassis and bar, not the ground, but mega dangerous as steel on steel is close to walking on ice once pressure is applied, have seen the mess that results from ignoring such commonly understood notions and none of it was pretty.
Suggest wedging something between the meshing gear teeth inside the timing cover rather than trying to hold the engine from turning using the gearbox and brakes, there is a lot of wind up in a tailshaft and axles that can match the energy release of a snatch strap if it all goes wrong and will use up a lot of the energy applied to the bar via the jack etc. The torque multiplier is a far better and safer idea so I'd stick with that one for personal safety reasons as well as the most potential for a successful outcome.

When Bernie gets around to it he will probably find that it hasn't been tightened to the specified torque.

From experience pulling off them things the bolt is half of it. The next bit is getting/making a puller the get it off the shaft.
The old Villiers engines were the best! Once you cracked the bolt it acted as a puller as you kept undoing it!!

Gees I go out for the day and all you lot talk behind my back .
After fruitless visits to establishments that should have had the elusive 54mm socket..........none narda zilch .
BUT at the last one on way out of town...........no they didn't have one neither..............BUT.. they had a 2 1/8" high impact socket . Which I now own . 3/4 drive for the purists . He done me a good deal (better than ebay) cause I gave him a good sob story .
So on with the nut remover or is that off ? tomorrow or Saturday .

Good job!!
You better tell Carol to go out for the day when you start!!
You'd think your next door neighbor would have taken it off while you were out shopping! ;) ;)
Is your 3/4" drive a slide through job? If so poke half out each side, one on each side for first try. 4' length of exhaust tube on each side too ................
