Morning Jon the nut came off relatively easy about 1/2 dozen wacks with a lumpy hammer on the breaker bar and it came loose .
Terry I cant see inside the engine cover will know more when I remove it , there is as in the picture a small key way in the harmonic balancer .

That keyway is all that stops the harmonic balance from spinning? No wonder they wanted the nut so tight. Good luck with the next step. I'd got ahead of myself and thought you were up to removing the compressor timing gear.

Me again , well after removing oil and crud from the engine , two goes with the water blaster and a foaming degreaser I found the oil leak .
Its the bloody air compressor . A small leak behind the casing , might be some thing as easy as tightening the bolts to stop it ....But I now have to remove it to install the new compressor . Which means I have to remove the outer engine cover , so much for doing a quickie and just doing the barrel piston and rings as a quick fix . Not a easy job...but haven't found a easy one yet .
Jon that collet wedgie thing came out with the harmonic balancer its still inside don't know how to proceed with that yet when I get around to the refit ? Thanks for the schematics .

Bernie.

It's a tapered bush.

Can you sit the pulley on a hollow tube ID is just bigger than the OD of the taper bush and tap the bush out?

Was the plan Jon , finding the correct size will be the challenge. There's only a nits tit in it. I know cause I have it with me. The harmonic balancer would be a loose fit without the inner bit .

How about a brass drift going tap, tap, tap around & around?
Support it on 3 sides on hardwood.
A bit like tapping out a bearing cone out of a hub.

Bruce the risk is any damage to the balancer.

Maybe even a socket splipping over the taper bush.

You want to get the socket/stand to take the force of the hit, which is being transfered from the taper bush though the balancer.

:!: Don't rest it on the side where the balance ring might move. :!:

There is the question whether you need to remove the taper???

I expect the tapered sleeve will come out when you attempt to refit the balancer to the shaft, if it doesn't come out then don't worry about it, just tighten that nut up real tight.
