Thanks for the update Lesley. Hadn't heard of Proston before. Might have to give it the once over when we get going after I get the Winny back together.
Cheers

Dave, it is a nice little town. Not a lot to recommend it but the pub does good food. The “Department Store” has good quality clothing, some at reasonable prices. Erich bought a nice winterish shirt for $30. The Jacaranda Tearooms was a bit ordinary though we had coffee and very ordinary open grills. Wouldn’t rush back but we are trying to support these small towns.

Heading to Chinchilla Weir tomorrow so I guess I will be cooking.
Cheers

I hope there is some water in the weir. We were there about this time last year and it was pretty much just black soup.
Good feed at the RSL though. We stayed at the showground as we needed power.
Cheers

Set up at Chinchilla Weir for two nights well away from the powered area which is a dust bowl. Here we at least have some grass.

David, the water level is low but still some pelicans around.

Tomorrow we will head in to town for a gas bottle refill and a look around but major roadworks in the centre make it a challenge.

We spent yesterday morning looking around Chinchilla. The main streets are well cared for with some nice sculptures and flower displays.

The Botanic Garden, established just over a year ago, is a lovely place to spend time.

We had a nice lunch at the RSL though the venue lacked much atmosphere. Thanks for the tip.

though the venue lacked much atmosphere That gives a whole new meaning to the house builders ads that push the feature "Free Air"
The gardens look well maintained, great to see some are able to travel around 8-)

Lesley & Erich on the road again.

Post by Swisslulu »

We moved on from Chinchilla to Roma where we stayed at the Clay Target Club for 3 nights. We stayed at the Roma Showgrounds about 8 years ago but did not really explore the town. This time we had a good look around and Erich spent quite a bit of time photographing birds at the Roma Bush Gardens.

Image

The first night was practise shooting and a $10 BBQ of steak sandwich/burger and chips. We enjoy watching the shooters.

In daylight the targets are white.
Image

At night they are orange.

Roma is known for its avenues of bottle trees. This is the largest one in town.
Image

We next headed to Mitchell at the donation camp about 4kms west of town at Neil Turner Weir. This is a huge camping area so no one was too close. No water going over the weir unfortunately.

Next stop was Morven Recreation Grounds which has about 10 sites with power and water for $10pn. As we didn’t need either, we chose what we thought would be an isolated spot along the fence on the entry road. How wrong were we. By nightfall the grounds were packed but we were still happy to be away from the scrum at the powered sites. $5pm unpowered and there is a dump point plus shower and toilets.

This morning we turned north to Augathella and the low cost camp ($5 pn) along the river in the centre of town. Unfortunately, the river is currently dry and so is the whole area but it is large and not too many here so far.

Image

We had a walk up and down the main street before stopping at the pub for lunch and the stopped at the butcher across the road for some beer sticks and smoked chicken breast.

Painted water tower.

The Augathella Meat Ant. The local football team are called the Meat Ants.

The movie Smiley is about an Augathella boy.

We will spend two nights here before moving further north to Tambo.
