Same here I don't have any memory of dirt.
I remember the Putty 5road still mainly dirt back in the late 50s early 60s.
Bernie.
Well the Putty Road is all bitumen now but still the bends and ups and downs remain. Lots of roadworks which I think kept the traffic light. We had a great couple of nights’ stay at Grey Gum Cafe about 5km as the crow flies from Putty. Boy they know how to make a burger! The steak and bacon burger was legendary. Fortunately we were able to devour it in the MH so we didn’t look like a pair of pigs.
Insurance companies ended up refusing to pay for any truck accidents on the Putty Rd after so many either fell asleep behind the wheel or were so pilled up they just didn't see the signs something was wrong and mechanical failure either sent them over the edge and down the big drops or they caught fire and burnt to the ground before anything could be done to reduce or put out the fires.
Add to that. the highway alone the coast is so much better now, few take the longer New England Hwy route to get to Brisbane.
Part of my early driving education was up and down the Putty Rd, I think I was around 13 yrs old the first trip down towards Windsor from around Singleton, the driver (future BIL) was too tired to drive any further and no one else in the car could drive ... so I volunteered, kept mum and sister wide awake for the first 50 miles or so, but they settled down after that and went to sleep

I believe I drove all the way down the Northern Rd to Narrellen before the BIL decided he would take over again

The river is dropping again now the wind has settled, but I doubt it will drop much before the serious flood water gets here. I belive they are dumping as much water as is feasible at the mouth of the Murray in an attempt to get the upper hand on the flood waters that are coming. The worrying part is, many towns further up that feed into the Murray areseeing the worst floods in over 70 yrs ...... we might see another '56 flood level yet ..... best check Bruce's dingy, organise a motor and get Margaret's canoe ready so we can get about on the road side of the house ..... park the vehicles up the back of the block and use the flood road to get to the workshop ..... might be a good time to get Jim the Junior Jeep registered and into action, just in case we get enough rain to make the dirt flood road a muddy bog .....

Back in the day before I married Carol, if I didn't turn up Friday arv she knew I was on my way to Nundle via the Putty. One trip we had a fuel tanker go over in front of us.... that was scary he was fully loaded.

Had to travel up to the very steep bit with the big drop over the side to rescue what we could of an Atkinson that had a turbo go up in flames and it was towing one of the companies fridge vans full of margarine and no idea what other stuff that wasn't on the manifest sheet.
By the time we got there, the river of burning stuff was headed down the hill and cars were taking evasive action with reverse braking manoeuvres being executed very badly and causing secondary accidents and completely blocking the road ...... got the driver and that was about it, the remains of both truck and trailer were well beyond restoration .....

We only used the Putty if real heavy ( had to dodge My White)
It was a slow painful trip but better than a cuppa grand fine.

The weir gates have been opened a bit more at Mulwala. I reckon the water level is up another 1/2 metre. I hope those further downstream are getting prepared.

Murray River at Corowa is about 500mm higher, although there is no longer water flowing vigorously across the approach to the John Foord Bridge. Just a trickle now.
Water has seriously torn up the bitumen… big repair job there! $$$+
Finally caught up with the report on sinkhole.
It’s on Gooramadda Road, about 10km from town, and it’s a doozy!!
Water has undercut a culvert, torn it to pieces and collapsed the full width of the road above it. 🫢

Looks about 2~2.5m deep x 2m wide.

Understandably, Gooramadda Road has been closed…

That means local residents will have to travel to Rutherglen via Albury & Hume Freeway… IF that route is open.
Howlong will be off the menu for maybe a month+, too.

Council says it’ll take that long to repair.

We had a visit from our local neighbourhood organiser regarding the flood we will receive as a Christmas present. There are back road contingencies but it will require a working bee with all the old-timers in the area (that would include me) to clear all the old furniture and trailers and what ever junk people (who were too tight fisted to pay to dump at the local tip) have dumped along the track. Then cut back the trees and slash the grass so we don't end up with a fire as well. From there we should be able to get to the top of Shearer Heights and they seem to have people with influence living there and the council has made a road from there to "Flood Road" that will eventually get us to the Sedan Rd and to Mannum from the top of the hill.
I doubt the Murray Bridge road will be open if the water gets that high and not real sure about the "Chain of Ponds Rd" to get to Adelaide ..... At least we will still be able to get to the workshop and Mannum Green for groceries and the bottle shop
I'm guessing tourist season will be a non event this yrs, all the camp grounds will be under water ..... maybe they'll reopen the showground for camping ..... the town does rely on that income to get it through the yr ....
