Re: What did you do to your rig today?
I got told years ago that the best way to wear out your synchros was to double clutch.
How can the synchro match shaft speeds if one shaft isn't being driven/turned?
Be even better with no clutch and just hold light pressure till the gears mesh?
If they are now that worn that the gears clash prior to the synchro then overhaul is in order.
Then again I'm not familiar with that gearbox ... or know which one it is even.
Might be worth investigating an auto box? I've always been amazed at how those garbo trucks swap gears and wear out brakes!!!

It is empty so put a bomb in it before starting to load maybe next week.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
The syncro ring a generally brass and is forced against the surface of the steel gear it is trying to match speeds with to engage the gear teeth in the selector drum that slides on the grooves of the drive hub. If the gear speed is already matched there is no work for the syncro to do, if the speed is a long way out there is a lot of work for the syncro and it will not allow the teeth of the selector drum to engage in the gear teeth until the speeds match. If the oil gets too hot it thins excessively and the syncro either jams onto the gear cone and the selection won't happen because the teeth don't align, or the syncro ring gets stretched to the point it no longer has much contact with the gear cone and the gear teeth and selector hub teeth meet at different speeds, that is the crunch you hear when grating the gears.BruceS wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2018 8:50 pm I got told years ago that the best way to wear out your synchros was to double clutch.

I doubt there are many manual gearbox garbage trucks these days, just about all Alison Auto and they don't provide much engine braking unless they have lock up converters and they are never engaged in low gear. Quite while back Alison developed a hybrid electric/auto transmission and this had regenerative braking to reduce the wasted energy changed to heat by the brakes and rather stored it as electrical energy in a battery pack. I can't say I've seen any out here though and I don't know if they are still popular or not for the garbage truck and passenger bus fleets.

Good to hear, Jon. Once in you should be able to tell if it was just your gear changing abilities.

Hi George,
The thought has crossed my mind; it could be expensive.
