Good morning everyone. It was a hot, humid and windy day here on the GC. We took Bandit for a walk and a swim early on then went to the big surf club at Broadbeach and had lunch looking out over the ocean. Plenty of white caps and not many surfers. The man says today will be hotter and even more humid, maybe with a late storm.
I hope everyone is sanitising and masking up again. The tv news is saying that covid is everywhere in the community again. Safe travels all those out and about.

Re: Good morning daily
Good morning All. 20* with 23* and some showers tonight and tomorrow forecast.
Painters, 5 of them, finished the eaves, fascia, gutters, downpipes, 3 garage doors + entry door, entry steps and landing at about 1pm yesterday and after I swept, hosed off and mopped the deck and showered I went to the local bowlo and had 3 light schooners.
Julie should arrive home from Canberra at about 7pm and will probably check out the painting job tomorrow morning.

Re: Good morning daily
I might shift this to a new thread, save dragging the "good morning thread off topic and make it easier to search at a later date ....
The new Allison 6 sp hybrid auto can still use the motor you have and drive through the diff etc you already have ... and has two overdrive ratios on top of the 4 speeds you already have ... and can decouple the diesel motor when no longer required to assist in the drive. An enormous amount cheaper and easier to install than 4 wheel motors.
The ultimate would be the new Allison e axle that replaces the whole driveline, ratios are inside the diff assemble rather than a separate transmission and a front axle unit can also be coupled to the rear axle unit to create that all wheel drive.
At the Electric vehicle meeting last night, the head of BYD SA was showing us the new Dolphin and some happy snaps of the Chinese market luxury vehicles, the top of the line, a 4 motor luxury looking unit, about the size of a Silverado, can turn 180* on the spot simply by motor drive and 4 wheel steering, a range of 1,000km highway driving speed and standing still to 100km/h in 3.6 secs .... we will never see them here as a BYD import, but no doubt someone will personally import one as a rival the new Bugatti/Rimac electric offering that looks more like a race car rather than a luxury vehicle.
As far as the hybrid drive, the 3 phase electric motor is coupled to the original motor, so the original motor can double as the power plant to drive the electric motor as a huge alternator, much the same way as the Toyota Prius does, it determines if the battery needs any charging, then adjusts the load on the regen to optimise the drive power while staying within the most economical engine operating parameters .... no more starter motor, no running the motor under light load to get the oil circulated, the electric motor spins the diesel engine until full oil pressure is reached before it releases the pump fuel cut, and can operate the engine diesel fuel cut at any stage it deems the diesel engines assistance isn't required, yet keeps it spinning to allow the water flow and oil to shift the heat away from key components, speeding up the cool down cycle without wasting fuel .....
The interface 2 way link between the house battery and traction battery will be the tricky part, but V2L (Vehicle to load, where the vehicle battery can power the house when the loads are high, then recharge when the power is excess to the house needs) is already becoming common in the new BEV's (Battery electric vehicles) to reach the market, I'm confident that can be adapted as well.

1 tonne per mtr, they both average out the same .... it is 7.5 tonne according to the owner, but ...... ummm.... there is a lot of fit out and the raised roof all adds weight. The battery pack and inverter will weigh less than the Honda 3.0i generator and the house battery will double as the start battery, so 3 x 120Ah Full River AGM out plus two huge 12v start batteries, that should drop the weight a bit more .... but the traction batteries will probably balance that out.native pepper wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 5:25 pm That's a heavy vehicle for it's length, my 78 Bedford is 12m and weighs 12 tonne fully loaded (1000lt oil). The Isuzu gets 3.5kpl and is mated to a 4 speed allison but a pleasure to drive at 85-90kph, doesn't go much faster other than downhill unless I really push it then the kpl drops well below 3kpl. When first got it was wondering of the 4 speed allison would be adequate for big hills and found it went up big steep hills without slowing down in top gear and that was a pleasant surprise.
Talked to the head of the EV conversion crew in Tas last year about converting my cruiser to an EV and just out of interest asked if the cost would be about the same with the bus. Which produced a big smile when told him size and weight,
Love my bus, fully fitted it or myself including making the swivel chairs which engineers actually passed which was a good shock and with it's low profile we can get to places others can't because of low branches etc. I paid $4000 for my ex school bus and have invested another couple of thousand, have lots of materials at my place accumulated over the years when living by a tip then transfer station, so been able to cherry pick many materials which have been getting for over 20 years. Now the council has taken over the transfer station and they charge for dropping things off and taking things, which is ridiculous a locals used it as a swap station bring some junk in and take some junk out.
It looks a good bus, bit underpowered and in my eyes expensive. I'd be looking for something less heavy, lots of available parts, easily converted, something like a parkway or big coaster, there's a lot around well fitted out and most $100000 cheaper/ Giving you lots left to play with in conversion and reconfiguring. I added exhaust brake, which makes a massive difference and was going to add air suspension but yet to get around to it. That's mainly because it's a mid mount engine and they sit really low and have bottomed it out a couple of times. The air would enable me to lift it up at times for better clearance, did check out lift blocks for it but the cost was over the top for the benefit it would give, but at the moment having it for so long, happy with it as is.
Your idea of a hybrid drive system sounds good, read about some trucks that have tried that and had mixed results. You'd probably need to put in a reasonably sized diesel genny to keep the batteries charged, but that just adds more weight and reckon you'd need a 4 cylinder motor to drive a genny capable of recharging. Then again a good regen system on a big rig should put back a heap of energy. Once had an ex Adelaide to Darwin volvo Ansett coach with 18 speed road ranger which cruised at 130kph on long runs and it had a 4 cylinder perkins driving the A/C and it made a hell of a noise, but things have come a long way since then. Still regret selling that beauty, but back then had a wife who demanded it be sold or she'd leave. Problem is sold it to satisfy her and she still left![]()
The tears are for the bus not her

Wow, not bad money if you can find someone who will pay those prices, but wheel motors are not the way to go, too much unsprung weight. Fine for mine dump trucks and agricultural machinery, but hopeless for anything on road. Inboard motors allow for independent suspension and torque vectoring wheel to wheel is all computer controlled these days so no wheel will spin faster than the others .... a lock diff in the old school thinking, without the problems of forcing the outer wheel and inner wheel to turn at the same speed when the wheels are not pointing straight ahead ... the computer determines how fast each wheel need to turn to execute the turn with zero wheel slippage.said if had $100-$130000 easy for the bus and $75-90 thousand for the cruiser depending on range. For the cruiser, said it would be best to use the Australian made wheel motors which at 15inch would suit the cruiser perfectly and supply excellent regen. Also said the manufacturer was working on 20inch truck/bus motor wheels and they should be available in mid 2024. He claimed and have also read that wheel motors provide much better all round performance, range and regen returns and you can switch from 4 to two wheel drive or any combination, which would make them excellent for off road and long range driving.

Talking to the old tyre fitter who replaced the Prius tyre with the damaged sidewall while he was trying to use the 'puter to generate an invoice. He said he was only just getting to the point where he could cope in the 20th century and had no hope in his lifetime of coping with 21st century stuff. I though he was going to choke when I suggested he stopped drinking the stuff with XX's on the label might help, or move to Qld before new years eve
