I am reliably informed by my local councillor that the long term costs of dirt versus tar see regularly maintained dirt come out on top, by a large margin (a really large margin). The determination includes initial road forming costs and a small nod to traffic volumes. Unsealed roads also protect local authority from some compo claims for damage caused by unrepaired road surface. I imagine the formula would apply country wide. We all know that divided roads have road toll implications (reduced toll) and dirt roads are less likely to contribute to revenue raising, so state mobs are in a quandary. I think I would rather see a train of grader, water truck, and roller, permanently on the job rather than sealed road in these situations.
A lot depends on who gets the job of painting it black in my opinion.
When a chap from my home town got the job of placing the black stuff across the Nullarbor he bought a stack of equipment, hired many men, worked them 24 hours a day 7 days a week, flew his own crews in and out as rosters dictated. He finished years before predicted, and far under budget.
He created his own airstrips as they progressed across.
Compare that to unionised, Gov departments? Yeah..........

Iza
Hi Iza, The trouble is they dont even grade it so it has to cost less, Bet the "councillors" dont drive on the dirt very much.
Think some how the said person was haveing a lend of you.. If this was the case then all roads would be dirt... Sorry have a think about it..... How long would a road last with B Doubles running up and down, one day?... And one big shower of rain all trafic would stop....
Bob n Bev....
Bruce we all know what gov. do and how long it takes to get some thing done, unless there are vots in it.. Look what is being done at the rock, all nice black roads with curbing ect. If dirt was better the place would have a lighter shade of brown "red maybe" big joke..
All I can say was it sure needs some work on the NT side, mose of the WA side was fine....
Well we made the 40 mile and it looks good, will get the boat in and hopfuly catch a fish or 2.. Move on monday to a nice spot as some one is leaving .. Just happens to be next to door to nikinoff, it wasnt planed .. All good..
BIG PROBLEM at Quobba ( blow holes) @ Carnarvon, silly council put the rates up from $5.50 a day last year to $11.00 a day this year......Not many there now.....!!
Bob n Bev...
Yep, really lovely surprise to see them, they are going to move into one of the 'smicko' sites with to kill for views.....right next to us!! Love you too Dotty!! xxxxx Tanks should be here soon too................
Rained with a BIG blow last night, not enough to close the road though and they've fixed the bad spot so all is good.
Cheers Wendy
Ash & Wendy They'll forget what you said, they'll forget what you did,
But they'll always remember how you made them feel.
