Re: Butane cooker ban.
I had considered the ban silly, until Yesterday. I helped a mate unpack his RV, and wondered why there was a hissing noise from one box. I opened it and found one of these appliances. It was shut, the bottle locked off, ignition off, but was still venting gas. Just by touching the cooker case the gas would release.
These devices are commonly stored inside small vehicles, and breathing butane cannot be good for you.

Re: Butane cooker ban.
Is that the reason Jon, the canisters leak easily, and if it is the problem is it with all makes of the canisters.? Read the warning on the cmca newsletter but they also give no reason for the banning.

Re: Butane cooker ban.
The reason is that some brands of the particular type of stove can overheat within the canister chamber. Leaking is not a stated issue. Plenty of information on the govt sites that deal with such things.

So chuck the link up please Steve. OK to ban things but they must give the details as to why.SteveW wrote:The reason is that some brands of the particular type of stove can overheat within the canister chamber. Another problem is that if you place a pan that is too large for the stove the heat is directed straight to the gas cylinder.

Re: Butane cooker ban.
It is only some models that have attracted the ban in NSW, but there are some high end brand names amongst them. I'm guessing these are copies of copies and some of the safety features have be skipped in an attempt to reduce the cost. We don't pack the cooker away with the gas tin still in place and always replace the plastic cap so they can't be accidentally bumped causing the gas to vent from the can.
Even the gas cooker fitted inside the motorhome/van can leak gas so the bottle should always be turned off when travelling, the full pressure 2 burner and 3 burner portable stoves can turn into a fire ball if placed on the ground so the stove is lower than the gas level in the cyl. All gas appliances need to be used in the hands of people who have their brains in gear, you can't protect some people so nature should be allowed to weed these ones out of the gene pool. Practices like filling gas bottles from the Autogas pump, no matter how many times they are told of the risks they still continue to do it because they are smarter than everyone else..... I'm sure you can all think of other dangerous practices you have seen people do where a bit of thinking about what they are doing would stop them, reading the warning labels before use would solve the exploding gas bottles for instance

Re: Butane cooker ban.
We saw a bloke filling smaller gas cylinders from a 9 kg cylinder at Aspley Falls, he had it all set up on a picnic table, we thought that looked dangerous.

I believe they were banned following the death of a guy at Casino when his stove went up in a ball of flame.
