Insurance company?
I think NSW is the only state that insists on an engineers certificate for a hitch.

Al.

But Alan don't you only need the towing vehicle registered and the towed vehicle registered?

.
I don't personally know the regs. only that I remember on the old now dead CMCA forum that someone got his checked and was told in NSW he needed an engineers certificate.

There is this additional for NSW http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... v_2007.pdf It involves the hitch connection on the toad to be engineered as well as the A frame.
there is more about the various states here http://hobohome.com/news/?p=614 Still a mine field and then you add individual police and RTA etc interpretations and.... It does appear that if you have the NSW certification there are that many iii's dotted and TTT's crossed the officer's eyes roll and they walk away

I just found an almost identical one for SA.
http://www.sa.gov.au/upload/franchise/T ... Towing.pdf
Only reference I can see about an engineer is ....
Persons wishing to undertake
A-frame towing may need to seek
advice from a recognised engineering
signatory or a chartered professional
engineer to ensure that the A-frame
device meets the technical
requirements of this Fact Sheet

Basically means "if you have no idea then go pay someone for advice".
I note that this info is only for vehicles up to 4.5t Gross Vehicle. (not gross combination)

In 2010 we had the 'Ready Brute' unit fitted for our Winnie & Suzy toad - by Northcoach in Brisvegas - they organised a Qld engineer with NSW/RTA affiliation to handle the paper work.

The following morning he attended the van park we'd stayed at overnight, took numerous photos of both the Suzy & Winnie connections, made copious notes about both vehicles & checked the rego papers for both as well. Then handed us a certificate with our vehicles rego numbers on it & advised we keep it in the glove box of the Winnie at all times to produce if challenged by ANY state police. All up his visit took around 45 minutes, the price was normally $350 but because we gave him a cup of real coffee that morning along with fresh made scones - a la Dot - & we had cash in hand, he only charged us $250. That certification went with the Winnie/Toad when we sold them as a package.

From all the people I have spoken to regarding towing a toad the NSW required VSI 41 and check sheet is held as the most useful piece of documentation you can carry, the relevant authority can do nothing but check the numbers, they know they would not stand a snowballs chance in hell if they were challenged in a law court and costs would be awarded.

I think the only state that would ask is NSW.

Or in Chucks case all states would require him to carry a current GAS producing certificate.

It may be the insurance company that asks if involved in an accident.
