Scalloping can also be due to out of balance.

Bernie, I had no idea how bad mine were until I took them off.

They were non-existent.

That's what I had thought was our original problem, just the shocks were a bit tired and maybe a wheel balance.
Then I weighed it!

We picked up the Winny this arvo. Front springs main leaf reset, second leaf removed and two in its place. The rears have had main second and third leafs replaced and helper pack removed. The little airbags Winnebago fitted on the front of all the 30 ft's is still there but has only 5psi in just to stop them collapsing. Front shocks as fitted are Bilstein heavy so I might have to get some Powerdowns or similar and turn down the setting to soften the ride. Testing and time will tell. Now all we have to do is either replace or shuffle the steers and get an alignment and wheel balance. Oh, and fix the TV aerial and possibly replace the awning, but that's another story.
The suspension guy told me that he has removed around 7-8 sets (over the years) of the airbags that Mr Winnebago fitted at the factory because they create an undesirable harsh ride and cause the front springs to try to invert the ellipse. I wish I had been able to get some pics of what the spring shapes were before the work started.

Before you shuffle the tyres, mark each with an arrow to indicate the direction of rotation. They must rotate in the same direction when fitted to a different position or corner of the vehicle. Completely different to how the old rag tyres were rotated, the steel belted tyres become directional when used and the steel belt would need to change its pattern if the direction was reversed and this often causes the tyre to delaminate at the steel belts and either form a hump or actually let go of the tread completely.

Thanks for that little bit of extremely relevant info T1.
I have never been a big fan of rotating radials on anything, but wasn't aware if it was applicable on heavy vehicle tyres, as all the wear charts show to rotate the tyres if this or that is the wear pattern.
I had the undesirable experience of having a second hand steel radial fail on the front of a road car many years ago.

On my f250 i was told the front tyres go straight to the back and the back ones go diagonall to the front.....right back to left front left back to right front which changes direction of rotation.

The tricky bit is swapping the inside tyre on dual rear wheels, it does swap left to right if changing to the front or from inside to outside on the rear, the fronts to the outside rears swap sides ...... that is the reason for the direction arrow before you remove them, totally confusing once laid on the ground unmarked.

I notice more and more car tyres now have an arrow depicting direction of rotation.
How can I unwind them again? ;)
