I carry the SPOT system...
It allows me to notify people when I have camped, or if I need non urgent assistance as well as an SOS.
I also have insurance to cover the cost of an SOS call... Cant remember what it costs but was not much (otherwise I would have remembered)
The device allows me to send a signal which is converted to emails to family members which has a map and very accurate position marked.
As a frequent solo traveler it gives me the confidence to know that I can call for assistance from anywhere in Australia that I can se the sky.

Re: EPIRB with GPS
Geoff we have a policy on this forum where a member is entitled to remain unknown.
Why?
God only knows.... I don't!
There have been several forums and in the past a few have 'crossed swords' over various issues. Maybe some wish to start afresh with a new persona? That's OK by us.
Everyone who becomes a member is invited to "introduce yourself" and to "tell us about your rig".
The choice is theirs I guess.
Do you reckon we SHOULD make it compulsory?
Those "spot" things do look good indeed. I might contact them for info for the forum in general. (group purchase anyone?)

Re: EPIRB with GPS
I have no special reason for using an alias. Nothing to hide. My name is relevant/meaningful to some and certainly not important in any of the discussions that we have here.
Lets not get distracted by someones name...
My SPOT is a great device and certainly provides the security I need.
I am a member of the NRMA and they assure me that they (or one of their Motor Club Associations) will come and find me wherever I am if my vehicle needs assistance.

I also like a name to call someone but if they pref to use a funny one, make your own up for them like uc or dail. Is that ok with you uc?

Hi Craig,Craig wrote:The spot GPS messenger has had some good reviews

You can also set it with a basic message to tell your friends/family that you are ok.
I recently bought an Garmin eTrex 10 Outdoor GPS for when I'm prospecting. No good for letting people know where I am though.
I looked seriously at the "Spot", there was an instance last year where a disabled hiker was rescued in the west thanks to one of these, she was in contact with family on the east coast. What I like most about the "In Reach" is that if you do happen to need the SOS abilities it informs you when the SOS has been received and ETA of assistance.
secondly it enables family to contact me in case of emergency, which, with the increasing frailty of family, becomes desirable.
The red dots are where the signal was sent, at the moment I have the unit set to send a position every hour whilst on the move. though I am about to change that to just where we stop.
I realize that there is nothing out there that suits all needs for all people, however I am of the o[pinion that this suits our needs best.
