DAVID, that was Noggins post. All I ever got to was Barbities pub/knock house when on weekend leave in Melbouirne from Puckapunyal. In those days they didn't spruke about EV's.

I'm now 87 years old, having experienced another birthday, and I'm still living in WA, single (gave up looking), white hair, no teeth, no money, no worries.
I plan to have another birthday next year.

Noggins wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 11:34 am As an observer of this post I can see 2 sides that will not agree with any points the other side make.
Yes EVs will be the way of the future in the long term, but at present they belong in the era of the first T model Ford.
Much further research and development will be needed until a battery system , or equivalent, is developed that does not produce more pollution than it is supposed to remove.

As for recharging on the way, be prepared for the ones that park at the charging station and get all it can deliver while the line up behind try to run their heaters/entertainment systems on a slowly discharging battery.
The best spare accessory for an EV, as I see it at present, is a 3Kw generator, for when out and not near a charging station.
And as a lot of the more away from local power supplied are using a Diesel Generator it would be minimising the present system into a personal type system.
As for whether I can refill a depleted IC fuel tank at home, well being a "fore thinker, I'd use the fuel from the 20Ltr drum I keep just for that purpose.
"tanks" here---Ron,
I expect that you may upset a few with that post.

This site sometimes reminds me of my youth living in Melbourne
I used to go to the dance Satd'y Night above the Flinders Street Railway Station ( VRI )
I'd go into the city early, get a hamburger or fish'nchips and stroll along the Yarra Bank listening to the "soapbox speakers"
I didn't heckle them, just listened, and evaluated what they were preaching with the small amount of knowledge I had at that age.
Some were worth a listen and some, to me, were full of it.
Some I did take notice of and some I dismissed outright.
So when I read some posts from the EV/Li Evangelists here I take the same cynical attitude, then try to make it fit into my known lines of thought.
Like when we had solar put on the house, why couldn't I make a portable battery pack that I could disconnect from the house and plug and clip into place on the van and use the solar that was already on the van ?
Then there would only be ONE purchase of Li batteries and be able to do 2 purposes........................ NAHH can't be done ?????????

You old have done the same as many who we fitted systems to their RV, plug the house into the RV and power it that way.
That is the plan with our Motorhome and house, fit all battery and solar control in the RV and plug the house solar in to run parallel with the RV solar when we are home

As far as the generator, there are already range extender battery packs that simply plug into the EV charging point so mu h like carrying a Jerry can, but they are smaller and lighter and add around 200 km range each ... and they. refill from solar or a power point

Sadly, the older we get, the more resistant to new ideas we become. There are still people claiming all lithium batteries catch fire and are the work of the devil, they will never work as well as lead acid batteries ..

If you were lucky enough to catch the ABC National news tonight, you might have seen the sensational beat up of a bus fire somewhere in Sydney.
Apparently the firey's put it out with water and it will now be buried under 20 tonne of sand until it burns itself out.
It happened in the maintenance workshop by the look of it on the tv. I'm pretty sure that using water isn't how you put out a lithium fire. But the news service never let fact get in the way of a good story.

Another news story last night showed a female reporter in the PASSENGER seat, no one in the drivers seat, ripping down the freeway. So much for no driverless cars in this country !

Apart from the fact it was highly illegal it made a good story didn't it.

I was not a drinker in those days, so I didn't get to join in the merry-making.
I do remember the 6 O'clock swill in Melbourne at the time.
It came with a warning not to use the trains until 6-30 as the drinkers would pour out of the Pubs and head for Flinders St Railway station.
Some parts of "The Good Old Days" weren't all that good.

When I discussed doing the same at a Mannum Meet-up I said I would have had to make the battery pack portable, because the van was not parked at my house, but in the Village's Van parking area,
It was seriously knocked down as an idea, which incidentally, also stopped me from converting from AGM Batteries to Li.
So I stayed with my AGM batteries. 200 Ah in the van and 300 Ah in the ute, solar on both, with inverters and linking cables, so there was plenty of power if I ever needed it, and I never converted to Lithium for an alternative power supply.
