Yesterday was spent cleaning the remainder of the right hand back of hydraulic lifters. Had to massacre a pr of long nose pliers to make a tool to remove the lower part of the internals that has the spring under it and the lightly spring load ball brg that acts as the valve to pump it up. I accidentally put one of the cleaned priming piston in without the spring under it .... after spending at least 1/2 hr trying to get it back out, another 1/2hr or more was lost making the special tool  At least it made it easier to dismantle the remaining lifters.
Bolted the cam back in, that was another task way harder than I expected, getting the slot in the cam lined up with the key in the gear turned out to be quite a challenge. The cam now has a few savagery marks on it where I tried to turn is in each direction using a pr of multi grips ... in the process, managed to dislodge a few rockers, they proved to be a challenge to get back in as well .......

The the plugs out for the all important compression test ..... why is nothing straight forward, 4 out of the 10 plugs had a piece of something or other, trapped between the hex head and the plug tube meaning I couldn't get the socket onto the plug .... the eyes were starting to fail by this stage, but the torch, a small screwdriver and some glue on the point, fished the bits out .... turned out to be bits of cable ties where I'd cut them off to get the wiring harness out of the way .....

Then the compression test ...... It appears putting the diesel in no:1 intake port loosened the rubbish accumulated there and as soon as the valve opened ...the wedged itself between the valve face and the seat resulting in clouds of diesel pumping out of the intake port

That was more than enough for one day .... I'll try again today ....

They are cheap enough, it's just the 6 weeks wait for them to arrive. If I have success with cleaning these units and it sorting the problem, I will order a full set ready to do a full replacement if/when needed ..... isn't that the way to never need them .... have them on hand to quickly sort the problem?
Not too sure about ordering a full top end gasket set, new head bolts (torque to yield single use) and a full set of valves as a "just in case" it might be engine out and an alternative mounted in it's place .... like the Lexus V6 and L110 hybrid transmission .......

David,
Finally managed to get a photo from my phone to this new computer .... ended having to email it to myself

Here is the rear driver side awning over the bedroom window

I've tried the Google search, apparently they are now Thule Omnistor brand ... but these are only 2 mtrs long at the most. Some show a remote, that I haven't found yet, others a big button with an arrow at the top and bottom, certainly haven't found anything like that either .....

uummmm....... Just had a return phone call from the previous owner ..... Those covers unclip each end, then flip up and it's just a manual awning under there
A very late lunch time, a beer and a sandwich, then up on the ladder and check it out ..... the knees said absolutely not to working on the engine today, hopefully tomorrow

Well, there's another project for you.... To convert to electric.

Now, no need to thank me formally for this brilliant idea, just click on the button. :P
