Re: My fridge problem .
The Star Rating label will give a number of kWh per yr. Multiply by 1,000 to get Wh per yr, multiply by 1.1 to give the added loses for the inverter (10%), divide by 365 to get Wh per 24hrs, divide by 12 to get Ah per 24hr day. Now to calculate how much solar is required to replace that, Wh per 24hrs divided by 5 (the number of peak sun hrs per day and just a figure for calculations) multiplied by 1.35 to allow for the inefficiencies of solar panels and you have the amount of solar required to power the fridge.
From the Hardy Normal calculator site:
400kWh per yr = 400,000 x 1.1 = 440,000/365 = 1206 rounded up. 1206Wh/12 = 100.5Ah per 24hrs. 1206/5 = 241w x 1.455 = 350w. Backwards, 350w x 0.7 (70%) = 245w x 5 peak sun hrs = 1225w 365 = 447125w/ 1,000 = 447.125kWh per yr.
All the figures are conservative, inverters correctly matched are better than 90% efficient, solar panels can be better than 70% efficient and batteries are generally above 12v...... and while the sun is shining the fridge is powered by solar and not the batteries, but you don't wanna know the math involved there

Cheeky bugga, it's Brian that uses the hair drying, I use the heated rollers or the straightening thingy depending on the mode.... cause I still got hair to do it withjon_d wrote:T1 is using the hair drier.... has it stopped raining at the Lake yet?

Re: My fridge problem .
Wouldn't it be good if we had an automatic 'gadget' that turned the fridge up (down cooler?) at 10AM and back to desired setting at (say) 7PM?
Instead of storing power to use thru the night we could also store a little extra coldness.
I'm usually 100% SOC by about 10AM .... most days anyway in summer.

Re: My fridge problem .
There is a fridge made just that way, it is a eutectic type and the refrigerant is circulated through a frozen block that simply freezes while there is power available and starts to warm up when there is no power. The fridge temp is controlled by the rate the refrigerant is circulated by a very small pump. A novel idea but as solar and battery storage is so cheap and very efficient fridges are so cheap these days the waste solar energy is more economically used for heating water than storing cold. But I guess a deep freeze cabinet could utilise the spare solar as well so it didn't need to run at night.BruceS wrote:Wouldn't it be good if we had an automatic 'gadget' that turned the fridge up (down cooler?) at 10AM and back to desired setting at (say) 7PM?

Thanks George .
Over nite temp in new fridge... low 2.7... high 5 Deg's ... Minus 20 in the freezer . Fridge was empty .
Happy with that so far , now I need a bigger boat.... no no no BIGGA inverter and psw .
Will be happy to just run it on shore power for the next two weeks .
These two little buggars seem happy enough .

Me thinks you have the "ins" & "outs" mixed up Bernie but, yes, it's looking really good!
PS. Is that your Grandkids? lol hehe
