The ATO will wipe a dept they owe you after 7 yrs, been there done that, so unless they have found the money owing and had confirmation from you that you understand you have a debt, the same 7 yr rule applies. The 7 yrs is from the time the return was lodged for that yr. If you lodge returns late they can find a debt owing after they have granted a refund and charge the accumulated interest from the end of financial yr the debt occurred, suffered that one as well, but they will not pay interest on money they owe you.... good scam eh. Thankfully the legal system still has the innocent until proven guilty in a court of law to back you up, the threat of all legal costs for your QC to appear on your behalf will be claimed if in fact the court finds the error is with the tax dept usually makes them back up and double check their figures for accuracy. Sadly, if you pay up and then find they are in error you have an up hill battle to get your money back as the fact of paying is seen as admitting guilt.

The importance of accuracy in your tax return:

The ATO has returned the Tax Return to a man in Strathalbyn after he apparently answered one of the questions.

In response to the question, "Do you have anyone dependent on you?"

The man wrote: "2.1 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million crackheads, 4.4 million unemployable scroungers, 80,000 criminals in over 85 prisons plus 450 idiots in Parliament, thousands of 'retired politicians' and an entire group that call themselves 'Senators'

The ATO stated that the response he gave was "unacceptable".

The man's response back to ATO was, "Who did I leave out?"

The entire public service and every tax avoiding multi national to name a few. Pensioners aren't classed as dependants as they have already paid their retirement fees as part of the tax system.

If aged pensioners have already paid their retirement fees...Why are they always trying to take it of them.

Today the young 'uns get Child Care benefits or parenting payments or family tax breaks. Not to mention the maternity leave and bonuses. They complain about paying aged pensions.

Back in our day (1973) we got $2 a month child allowance from the Centrelink equivalent. I just did a google on that amount, and in 2015 the relative/historic standard of living value of that income or wealth is $18.22.

Whinge away kiddos, we paid for our meagre pensions with our taxes :D

Dot, When I read your joke about the ATO, I thought "no wonder they hounded George!"

Would you believe today via snail mail we got a letter from the ATO saying we could be fined $xx for every year that no tax return has been lodged and A letter from the debt collectors demanding we pay $200 pr fortnight. WTF are these twats do all day? anyway G is going back to the accountant person in the morning and let her handle these idiots.

G went to see the tax lady with the letters we got yesterday, after she had punched some buttons on her comp it revealed that the ATO had replied to her first correspondence but another person in the ATO had not seen it so they sent a letter, she then got onto the debt collectors and gave them a ref # to the info. What a bloody pack of wankers. So now we wait for the next stupid letter or threatening letter. As Bruce would say "stay calm ol girl" :)

The mail man delivered yet another letter from the ATO but this time there was a cheque for the $500 that G had paid the debt collector so all is equal again :) :)
