Spoken to a couple of truckies that have lost a steer, not a pleasant experience, better if it is the kerb side one though, less chance of having a head on with the 50 tonnes of B dub coming the other way !
Got an email this morn, new studs and nuts are made, just waiting on plating so will be mobile again early next week.
Got to be back in 2 weeks for an inspection by a strong prospective buyer

That'll take a couple of hours I'd say?

Had a steer blow on a bogie drive commer early 70s going downhill loaded with bulk wheat about 20 ton, bent the tie rod lost the whole front axle and finished up on the drivers side with wheat spread a foot deep across the road. I was lucky, being a farm truck the passengers floor was where the jack and toolbox was kept and you can guess where that finished up, with me on the drivers door. Was last load on a Friday afternoon before Christmas so was pushing the old girl to get unloaded and back home to go to the pub.

Fight it! Fight hard!
I had one and even though I couldn't steer it I could hold it in a general direction. That was with power steering too.
Basically you have no warning & just gotta hang on and enjoy the ride!
Slamming the brakes on hard CAN makes things worse.
I was lucky I was in a semi so I just locked up the trailer brakes and that acted a bit like a parachute.....
I still finished wedged between two trees & a farmer cut a path out with his chainsaw.

Had it happen on a motor bike back in the 70's .

My equivalent was the destruction of the compressor on a Freightliner B-Double with a Cummins engine (before the Signature) where one gear driven shaft drives the power steering and the compresser. With a slight bang - no steering and bits of the compressor and engine oil out the bottom. Luckily the road was curving slightly to the right and I was able to muscle is off to the left. Could have been worse with a left curve and a Greyhound bus coming the other way. Happened 10 south of Tarcutta before the road was duplicated.

We lost the driver side front tyre the day we picked up the swagman .3 pm on a friday on the freeway. Was very easily controlled. Got lucky i guess ☺
